Milender, Team North Dakota Take 4th at NIT

Valley City freshman Elly Milender, of Jamestown’s Blue Jay hockey team, joined Team North Dakota, coached by the University of North Dakota standouts Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux, as North Dakota finished fourth with a 1-3 record in April 24-26’s CCM High School National Invitational Tournament at the Plymouth Ice Center in Plymouth, Minn.

North Dakota yielded two goals in the second period, another in the third and a short-handed third-period goal in Thursday’s 4-0 opening loss to the Minnesota Seniors.

Samantha Nalley NSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Valley City State senior right-hander Samantha Nalley is the North Star Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week, the NSAA announced Monday.

Nalley, the 5-foot-10-inch Pocatello, Idaho native, tossed a complete game as the Vikings swept Dakota State in Saturday’s home doubleheader.

Nalley threw seven innings in the 5-1 game one win, giving up only a run on six hits and notching three strikeouts.

Brittany Lehner NSAA Softball Co-Player of the Week

Valley City State senior Brittany Lehner is the North Star Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week alongside Jamestown sophomore Emily Newman, the NSAA announced Monday.

Lehner, the 5-foot-11-inch Watertown, S.D. native, batted 6-for-7 at the plate with two runs, a home run and four RBIs as the Vikings swept Dakota State in Saturday’s doubleheader. Lehner landed game-tying RBI singles in both the fourth and fifth innings, hit the second of two sixth-inning back-to-back home runs with senior teammate Liz Hall-Swell in a 10-6 win, and finished with a slugging percentage of 1.286.

Viking Baseball Splits Weekend at Mayville

Valley City State baseball won a 2-1 pitcher’s duel in Saturday’s opener at Mayville State, then fell just short in a 13-10 slugfest for a weekend split.

Valley City State stands 6-8 in North Star Athletic Association action
and 18-27 overall entering Tuesday’s 4 p.m. regular-season finale
at Winnipeg.

Viking Softball Chasing North Star Crown

Valley City State softball’s 5-1 and 10-6 Saturday home sweep of Dakota State brought them two wins closer to their first conference championship since 1990, the season in which the Vikings won their fifth straight championship.

The Vikings stand atop the North Star Athletic Association with a 10-2 conference record and a 21-19 overall mark, just above University of Jamestown’s 10-4 North Star record. Valley City State’s remaining games are Sunday’s 1 p.m-and-3 p.m. home doubleheader against Dakota State, and Monday against Mayville State. Jamestown faces Presentation College on Sunday.

Shanley Steals Game 1, Holds in Game 2

Hi-Liner baseball held a 2-1 lead through six innings of Saturday’s first game against visiting Fargo Shanley, but a two-out Deacon triple in the top of the seventh scored two runs for the 3-2 win. Valley City staged a comeback after trailing 5-0 early in game two but fell short, 6-3.

Hi-Liner Fastpitch Rolls in Minnesota

Hi-Liner softball swept Saturday’s Detroit Lakes Tournament with an 11-1 six-inning conquest of host Detroit Lakes (Minn.), an 8-5 triumph over Fergus Falls (Minn.) and an 11-6 defeat of Fargo Shanley.

Hi-Liner Baseball Blanked, then Rally Comes up Short

Valley City senior Austen Meyer struck out four Grand Forks Central batters in six road innings on Thursday, but Knights senior Spencer Meyer fanned 10 Hi-Liners in six frames for the 5-0 game one win. Valley City outhit the Knights 7-6 in game two but came up short, 4-3, in a sixth-inning comeback bid.

Central brought in single runs in the second, third and fifth, and two more in the sixth, on eight total hits and three Valley City errors. Hi-Liner bats produced five hits.

Lentz Leads Hi-Liner Golfers at West Fargo Invite

April 24, 2014

Hi-Liner boys golf took seventh place with a 354 team total and four event points at Tuesday’s West Fargo Eastern Dakota Conference Invite at King’s Walk Golf Course.

Junior Jared Lentz led Valley City with an 81. Freshman Drew Oberlander shot a 90, sophomore Collin Hoss a 91, senior Dustin Miller a 92, junior Ian Schweitzer a 95, and freshman Levi Nix a 96.
