Viking Baseball Blasts Hastings

March 18, 2014

Viking bats came alive Tuesday morning as Valley City State blasted 16 hits and scored runs in five of the first seven innings, including a four-run rally in the top of the first, in an 11-7 victory over Hastings College (Neb.)

Valley City State improves to 7-11 on the season and 3-4 in their current Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

Next up is a Thursday doubleheader, the first game of which starts at 3:30 p.m. against Hastings, the second at 7:30 p.m. against Bethesda University (Calif.)

Lehner, Pedersen, Trautman and Even Named Scholar-Athletes

Valley City State senior forward Brittany Lehner, junior guards Stephanie Pedersen and Sierra Even and junior forward Megan Trautman were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes by the NAIA national office on Monday.

In order to qualify for the NAIA Scholar-Athlete award, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

O’Day, Breske New VCSU Football Offensive Coordinators

Valley City State University head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced Friday that coaches John O’Day and Jake Breske have been promoted to co-offensive coordinator positions.

O’Day and Breske replace Marty Costello, who departs for a job at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Costello served as VCSU offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

Oestern, Larson Wrestle into Team North Dakota

Valley City 7th-grader Jaden Oestern and 6th-grader Parker Larson will represent the Hi-Liners and North Dakota at the April 11-13 Elementary and Middle School Wrestling Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Oestern qualified for Team North Dakota as the qualifying tournament 195-pound runner-up on March 15 in Mandan, N.D. Larson qualified as the 100-Pound Champion.

Also competing for Valley City were Koye Grebel, Jared Undem, Callen Oestern, and Jake Tangen.

Grace Saves a Win against VCSU on the Diamond

Viking baseball outhit Grace University (Neb.) 11-10 on Monday, but Grace came out ahead on the scoreboard with a 5-4 win in Tucson, Ariz.

Valley City State (6-11) looks to rebound on Tuesday as they take on Hastings College (Neb.) at noon CST and Doane (Neb.) at 4 p.m. CST.

Viking Softball Wins 4th Straight

Valley City State softball picked up a second straight sweep and won their third and fourth games in a row with Monday’s 6-5 defeat of Doane College (Neb.) and 4-2 triumph over Tabor (Kan.).

The Vikings improve to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in their Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

VCSU plays two games Tuesday, one each against Southwestern (Kan.) at 11 a.m. CST, and British Columbia at 1 p.m. CST.

Viking Softball Goes 1-2 Friday

Valley City State softball opened Friday with a 2-1 victory over Baldwin-Wallace, fell in a 10-0 shutout to Dordt College and led for most of the nightcap before losing a 6-3 contest to No. 10-ranked Olivet Nazarene.

The Vikings are now 4-9 on the season and 2-5 in their current Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

VCSU Baseball Splits Friday

Valley City State baseball won Friday’s first game against Olivet Nazarene in 5-4 comeback fashion but dropped the nightcap to Dakota Wesleyan, 6-4.

VCSU trailed Olivet 3-1 before producing four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and completing the rally. In game two, Dakota Wesleyan scored three runs in both the first and second innings and held off a Viking rally.

Lady Hi-Liners Ousted in State Consolation Semifinals

March 17, 2014

Three times before Friday’s Class A Girls State semifinal the Lady Hi-Liners gave West Fargo all they could handle, but all three times the Packers got away.

Friday’s loser-out matchup was no different, as seven lead changes yielded a 33-26 West halftime lead before Valley City’s fortune ran out and West Fargo advanced to the fifth-place game, 67-49.
