Babe Ruth Rolls Over Edgeley, 32-1, for Season Sweep

Dawson Dietrich landed five of 31 Valley City hits on Tuesday as Babe Ruth scored 13 first-inning runs, six in the second, seven in the third and six in the fourth to demolish Edgeley, 32-1.

Rylee Bjork’s five-inning, five-walk, four-strikeout no-hitter did the rest to complete the season sweep.

Howard New Hi-Liner Girls Basketball Head Coach

Valley City Public Schools announced Monday that Mr. James “Jimmy” Howard is the new Hi-Liner head girls basketball coach.

Howard is in his second year as an educator in Valley City working with the Sheyenne Valley Special Education Unit, and will begin his first year as head coach of the girls basketball program. Howard is also a Valley City junior high football coach and head junior high track coach.

Anderson, Didier Perfect Marksmen

Mark Anderson and Blake Didier accomplished the formidable task of shooting 25 of 25 clay pigeon rounds at the Valley City Trap Club, Anderson in early May and Didier on June 10.

Didier pulled off a 23-of-25 first round before pulling off a 25-of-25 second round.

“I just focused,” said Didier, who employed a 12-gauge shotgun for the outing.

Valley City’s course puts five shooters at five stations, 16 yards from the targets, with each shooter firing at five targets at each post.

Babe Ruth Sweeps Oakes Away Again

Valley City Babe Ruth blew into wind-whipped Tornado Alley in Oakes, N.D., on Monday night, leading 12-0 after three District innings for a 14-0 five-inning triumph before scoring six runs in the non-District fourth to take the closer, 6-1.

“This game could have been close to the most complete game we have played all year,” said Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes of the opener. “From every aspect of the game we performed well, and did a lot of the little executing that needs to be done.”

Weeks Signs with Viking Basketball

Valley City State University men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced on Friday that 6-foot-1-inch guard Marcus Weeks of Yuma, Ariz., has signed a letter of intent to attend Valley City State and play basketball for the Vikings this fall.

A three-year starter and Gila Ridge High School’s leading scorer in 2013, his senior season, Weeks averaged 14.3 points, 5.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game as he helped Gila Ridge High School to a 17-11 record this season.

Tennis Alumni Open Tournament

June 29, 2014

June 14 saw the very first Valley City Alumni Tennis Tournament that featured over 23 past players from teams including Valley City State varsity, the Valley City State Viking Club, Valley City High School, the Valley City Tennis Association and Valley City Parks and Recreation.

The final matches were not completed due to rain. Money raised from the event supports Valley City’s tennis programs and facilities.

Dawson Dietrich and Garret Suhr threw back-to-back five-inning District one-hitters as Valley City Babe Ruth swept Wishek 12-0 and 14-0 Thursday night at Charlie Brown Field.

“This was a good bounce-back for our boys today after a tough one yesterday [a 3-2 District loss at Napoleon],” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “Both pitchers today did what they needed to do, and threw strikes with the lead they were given. Today was just one of those days at the plate where guys found spots where the defenders couldn’t make a play on it.”

Viking Scramble Winners

Twenty-two teams competed in June 21’s Viking Golf Scramble, hosted by the Viking Century Club, at Bjornson Park and the Valley City Town and Country Club.

The Scramble, one of the largest fundraisers for Valley City State student-athlete scholarships, featured sponsors including Dacotah Bank, Farmers Union Insurance, LaFarge, Miller Motors, Leevers Foods, Heritage, Valley Realty and Wick Construction.

The Championship Flight team of James Thornton, Steve Sedler, Cody Flatten, Jerod Satrom and Kory Klubben won with a 14-under score of 57.

Run or Dye Saturday in Fargo

9 a.m. Saturday at West Fargo’s Red River Valley Fair is a Run or Dye ‘Your City, Your Color, Your Vote’ Give Love World Tour 5K event, the first to offer five or more eco-friendly cornstarch dye stations with more colors added. Participants use a Run or Dye color voting widget to pick which colors they will adorn throughout the route.

After the event is the world-famous dye festival with a color explosion in a celebration of life, friendship, fitness and fun.

Single runner registration is $57. Team (four or more runners) registration is $52 at runordye.com.
