West Fargo Softball Takes Two in Valley City

Hi-Liner softball endured West Fargo’s 10-run fourth inning in Tuesday’s 15-3 opening defeat, then tightened up the defense but fell 7-1 in game two.

“I was glad that, in the second game, we didn’t just fall apart,” Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren said. “We could have come back and fallen apart and given up 10 or 11 runs in the second one, too, but we didn’t ... the top of the order’s got to start hitting — they’re the ones you count on, and that’s why they’re in the top of the order — and they haven’t done that for the last couple games.”

Hi-Liner Baseball Swept at West Fargo and Davies

Hi-Liner baseball suffered a five-inning, 17-0 no-hitter loss at West Fargo in Thursday’s opener, then managed three hits in the follow-up 7-0 defeat.

Friday opened with a five-inning, 11-1 defeat at Fargo Davies followed by an 11-0 five-inning no-hitter loss to Eagle senior Andrew Lein.

VCSU Men's Golf 8th at MCAC/North Star Conference Championships

Valley City State men’s golf took eighth place in April 26 and 27’s MCAC/North Star Conference Championship meet in Nebraska.

Men’s teams played 36 holes on April 26’s Day 1 before April 27’s scheduled third round was canceled due to rain. The Vikings shot a 337 in the first round, then improved by 20 shots with a 317 in the second round.

Hall Sewell NSAA Softball Player of the Week

Valley City State senior third base Liz Hall-Sewell is the North Star Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week, the NSAA announced Monday.

Hall Sewell, of North Pole, Alaska, completed her Viking career on 5-for-7 batting with a double and a pair of two-run home runs in Valley City State’s three-game North Star/Frontier Conference Postseason Tournament stretch. Hall Sewell drove in four runs, drew four walks and batted .714 with a slugging percentage of 1.714 in the tournament.

20 Hi-Liner Track & Field Personal Records at Packer Invite

Hi-Liner track and field set 20 new personal bests and placed in three events at Friday’s Packer Relays Invitational in West Fargo.

“It was a good meet for a lot of kids,” Valley City head coach Trevor Bakalar said. “I knew we had a few [personal bests], but I didn’t think so many. The older kids were gone for the New York Trip, so we went with sophomores and juniors. It’s a real indication of where we may fit for Regionals [May 17 at Cushman Field in Grand Forks, N.D.]: where can we get personal bests, where can they best qualify, and where can they help us out the most?”

Dakota State Knocks out Viking Softball

Valley City State softball, the No. 2 seed and North Star Athletic Association champion, opened the North Star/Frontier Conference Postseason Tournament in Jamestown with Friday’s 13-9 win over No. 5 Presentation and Friday afternoon’s 3-0 loss to No. 4 Great Falls (Mont.) before falling 3-2 in Saturday’s elimination game to No. 6 Dakota State.

Dickinson State Baseball Strikes Vikings

No. 3 seed Viking baseball’s North Star-Frontier Conference Baseball Tournament run came to an end with Sunday’s 8-2 loss to No. 5 Dickinson State that followed Saturday’s 20-3 loss to No. 2 Mayville State and Friday night’s 11th-inning 8-7 walkoff win against No. 4 Dakota State.

Hi-Liner Golf 7th at Grand Forks

Hi-Liner junior Jared Lentz tied for sixth place with an 82 and Valley City took seventh with a 363 at Thursday’s 10-team Eastern Dakota Conference meet at Grand Forks Country Club.

Valley City sophomore Collin Hoss shot a 92, freshman Levi Nix a 93, freshman Drew Oberlander a 96, senior Dustin Miller a 97 and junior Ian Schweitzer a 102.

West Fargo finished first with a 319, and Packer freshman Cole Johnson took first in individual competition at 76.

Alex Quist Signs with Viking Basketball

Valley City State men’s basketball has added a sure-handed point guard to its 2014 recruiting class.

Viking head coach Jeff Kaminsky announced Wednesday that Alex Quist, a 5-foot-11-inch point guard from Western Dakota Association champion Bismarck Century High School, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Vikings and attend classes at VCSU this fall.

Valley City State sophomore Jenna Coghlan is the North Star Athletic Association Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, senior Jordan Aus is the Men’s Outdoor Co-Field Athlete of the Week, and senior Philip Reuer is the Men’s Outdoor Co-Track Athlete of the Week after stellar performances at Saturday’s Al Cassel Relays in Valley City.

Coghlan, of Valley City, was the top NAIA finisher in the Women’s Javelin Throw with a second-place toss of 35.10 meters (115 feet, 2 inches).
