Allyson Suhr Returns to Valley City State

Allyson Suhr, Valley City State women’s basketball’s latest addition, is a familiar face for local fans.

Viking women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announced Thursday that Valley City native Allyson Suhr has signed a letter of intent to attend Valley City State and play for the Vikings this fall.

Suhr, a 2012 Hi-Liner graduate, played the last two seasons at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.

Diegel Signs with North Dakota State College of Science

Hi-Liner senior Danica Diegel signed a letter of intent on Friday to attend and play softball for North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.

Falcon Softball 4th at State

East No. 3 Enderlin-Maple Valley’s Class B State run in Minot took a turn for the dramatic with Friday’s 16-14 loss to defending champion East No. 5 Central Cass — in which the Falcons nearly rallied from a 7-2 deficit — and Saturday’s sixth-inning sac fly that gave West No. 1 Westhope/Newburg/Bottineau the 1-0 Third-Place Game win.

“It’s not the outcome we wanted, but I’m sure it was a good pair of games for the fans,” said Falcon assistant coach Neva Hamre on Saturday. “It’s hard to play the next day after a game like that.”

FCT’s Paige Meyer Commits to Vikings

Valley City State women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announced on May 22 that Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah senior Paige Meyer has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Vikings.

Meyer, a 5-foot, 2-inch shooting guard, averaged 10 points, three steals and two assists per game this season as she helped FCT to a 22-3 record and a North Dakota Region 1 runner-up finish. The Rebels won back-to-back District 1 championships in her junior and senior years, and took fourth place in Region 1 last year.

Hi-Liner girls tennis hosted an Awards Night to announce postseason honors.

Freshman Breanna McDonald won the Coaches’ Award.

Junior Clarissa Olson is the Most Valuable Player.

Eighth-grader Reagan Ingstad is the Most Dedicated.

Eighth-grader Breana Buringrud received the Junior Varsity Coaches’ Award.

Senior Sara Gilbertson is the Most Improved.

Gilbertson and junior Sam Coit took sixth at the Eastern Dakota Conference
Doubles Tournament and finished in the top eight at State in Bismarck.

Ingstad and Olson won the No. 3 EDC Doubles seed and second place at State.

Miller, Hi-Liner Golf 7th at Regionals

Dustin Miller led all Valley City golfers with an 80 as the team finished seventh at 338 for four team points in Wednesday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Tournament at Wahpeton’s Bois de Sioux Golf Course.

West Fargo senior Riley Johnson finished with a 72 for his sixth first-place finish in eight meets this season, and his fifth in a row. A 307 Packer team total notched their fourth event win and their second in a row.

“We can’t even use the weather as an excuse,” said junior Jared Lentz of the team result on an 82-degree day.

Jessica Meland 24th in NAIA Hammer Throw

Valley City State sophomore Jessica Meland, of Harvey, N.D., competed in her first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women’s Hammer Throw Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala., on May 15, where she fouled on her first and third attempts but landed 24th place on her second throw, which sailed 45.33 meters (148 feet, 9 inches).

Meland’s 45.33 meters was shy of her personal-best 50.29 meters (165 feet) set at the Northern State Open on April 18.

Late Runs Sink Hi-Liner Softball at EDCs

A pair of untimely hits derailed No. 2 Valley City’s plans for a second straight State appearance.

Fargo Davies freshman Mercedes Swanson’s two-run eighth-inning double lifted her No. 6 Eagles to a 2-0 semifinal upset on Friday, then Shanley senior Marissa Schons’s two-run double in the seventh scored two for the No. 4 Deacons’ 2-1 State Qualifier comeback on Saturday.

Olson and Ingstad Double Up for 2nd at State

Hi-Liner junior Clarissa Olson and 8th-grader Reagan Ingstad are State Tennis Doubles runner-ups after vanquishing East champion Grand Forks Red River freshman Maddie Anderson and junior Alexis Caoili 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the semifinal, and falling 6-2, 6-2 in the title match to West champion Bismarck St. Mary’s seniors Alicia Beck and Mary Roller.
