Hi-Liner Baseball Wraps Up Season

Hi-Liner baseball completed the season over the weekend with a 9-5 loss to Northern Cass and a 13-1 five-inning fall to Hillsboro/Central Valley on Friday before host Devils Lake took both of Saturday’s games, 4-2 and 9-0.

Valley City finished 0-18 in the Eastern Dakota Conference and 1-23 overall.

Valley City Tennis Hosts Block Party

Valley City Tennis Association hosted its annual USTA Tennis Block Party May 7 at the Valley City Recreation Center, where youth and adults played tennis games and received prizes.

Valley City Parks and Recreation, Valley City State Club Tennis, Young People’s Healthy Heart Program of Mercy Hospital and Valley City High School Tennis sponsored the event.

Hi-Liner Girls Tennis Takes East No. 3 Seed

No. 3 Regional seed Hi-Liner girls tennis won a trip to State on Thursday in Grand Forks, N.D., and will face West No. 2 Bismarck Century in Thursday’s first round at the Bismarck/Mandan Area Tennis Courts.

Valley City took the No. 3 East seed with a 4-1 first-round win over No. 6 Fargo North, a 2-3 second-round setback to No. 2 West Fargo, and a 3-2 State Qualifier triumph over No. 5 Fargo Shanley.

Top seed Grand Forks Red River took the East championship, 5-0, over West Fargo.

Meland Headed to NAIA Nationals

Valley City State sophomore Jessica Meland will compete in the Hammer Throw at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, May 22-24 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Meland, of Harvey, N.D., qualified with a school-record throw of 50.29 meters (164 feet, 11 inches), which put her 16th in a field of 27 National Championship throwers, at April 18’s Northern State Invitational in Aberdeen, S.D.

Hi-Liner Softball Wins 2 of 5 Weekend Games

May 19, 2014

Hi-Liner softball won two of five games between Friday and Saturday, losing 8-7 to Fargo Davies at home on Friday before trouncing Grand Forks Red River 11-0 in six innings and 11-5 at home before falling 5-1 and 12-2 in five innings at West Fargo on Saturday.

Hi-Liner Gymnastics Awards Announced

Hi-Liner gymnastics has announced season awards:

Freshman Taylor Johnson is the MVP, junior Abby Brown the Most Dedicated, sophomore Brienne Roehrich has the Best Attitude, and Hannah Sorensen is the Hardest Worker.

Valley City won the Eastern Dakota Conference team championship and took eighth with 136.050 points (35.483 Vault, 31.450 Bars, 33.567 Beam and 35.550 Floor), the best performance of any East Region team, at Feb. 28-March 1’s State Meet in Bismarck, N.D.

Red River Baseball Breaks Away Twice

Hi-Liner pitching held Grand Forks Red River to three scoreless innings in Thursday’s road opener, but fell 10-0 in six innings before yielding the late game 15-0 in six after 12 fourth-inning runs.

Red River jumped ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning and scored eight more runs in the sixth.

Roughrider senior Samuel Bye brought in three runs on two of seven Roughrider hits in the first contest, and senior Erik Hanson put up a complete seven-strikeout game.

Valley City sophomore Jordan Magnuson worked five innings for three strikeouts against five team errors.

Lentz Makes State, VC Boys Golf 9th at King's Walk

Hi-Liner junior Jared Lentz qualified for State with Thursday’s 78 at King’s Walk Golf Course in Grand Forks, N.D., from which Valley City came away with ninth place for two event points at 341.

“The team struggled a bit today in conditions that were a bit chilly, but not very windy,” Valley City head coach Buff Murray said.

Freshman Levi Nix shot an 86, sophomore Collin Hoss an 88, freshman Drew Oberlander an 89, senior Dustin Miller a 99 and sophomore Jordan Eggermont a 105.

Brommenschenkel Signs with Vikings

Valley City State women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announced Wednesday that Brooke Brommenschenkel has signed a letter of intent to attend classes at VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings this fall.

Brommenschenkel, a 5-foot-7-inch shooting guard, completed her high school career at Norman County West (Minn.), where she is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,451 points.
