Diegel, Class A All-Stars Roll in OT

July 16, 2014

Dierra Diegel scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, went 3-for-3 from the line and pulled down eight rebounds as the 38th Lions Class A Girls Basketball All-Stars erased a five-point deficit with 1:35 left, forced overtime and cruised to a 79-68 win Tuesday at the Bismarck Civic Center.

“It’s an honor,” said Diegel, the 5-foot-10-inch Hi-Liner forward who practiced with Bismarck Century head coach Ron Metz and Class A twice on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. “I don’t remember the last time someone from Valley City was selected.”

Babe Ruth Bends Steele for Top District 6 Tournament Seed

July 15, 2014

Dawson Dietrich, Garret Suhr and Valley City Babe Ruth held Steele scoreless through six combined innings at home on Monday, setting the scoreboard ablaze to claim July 19-22’s top District 6 Tournament seed with a 10-0, five-inning District romp and a 21-2, five-inning District season-ending demolition.

“We played some pretty good baseball today,” Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes said. “Both pitchers struggled in their first innings, but then settled in with the lead that they were given.”

Post 60 Drops 3 of 4 to Harvey, Grafton

July 14, 2014

Legion Post 60 led Harvey 3-0 through two League innings Friday at Charlie Brown Field until Harvey came alive for an 8-4, eight-hit win, the momentum from which they carried over to take the non-Leaguer, 8-0.

“We had a couple bobbles, and when we did have errors they scored on them,” said Jesse Johnson of Post 60’s six-errors-to-two League affair.

Grafton led Saturday’s home League game 8-0 after five, but Post 60 scored six straight runs in an ill-fated comeback to fall 8-6.

Babe Ruth, Napoleon Duel to Split

July 11, 2014

Nate Rodriguez pitched seven District innings for 15 strikeouts and batted 3-of-3 Thursday as Valley City Babe Ruth took 6-2 revenge on Napoleon for June 17’s road loss.

“It was a good win for us, especially to make up for that loss out in Napoleon,” Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes said. “We struck out too many times at the plate and left a few to many guys on base, but came through with some clutch hits and picked up a good win.”

Napoleon dynamite pitching held Valley City hitless in the three-inning, 4-0 non-District finisher.
