Stroup, Bruins Spike Hi-Liners

September 10, 2014

Valley City’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) loss at Fargo North on Sept. 4 was tough.

Tuesday’s loss to Fargo South was tougher.

Bruin 6-foot junior right side/setter Emily Stroup’s 25 kills, 13 assists, 12 digs and a block overwhelmed Hi-Liner rallies in the second and third sets to deny Valley City their first Eastern Dakota Conference win, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 26-24).

South opened the first set, 6-0, and held up against Valley City’s surge.

Valley City led 10-9 in the second, but South held an edge of 15-10, 24-21, 24-22 and 24-23.

JV Cross Country Sets PRs in Cooperstown Win

September 9, 2014

Saturday was a great day to run for the Hi-Liners! Casey Engelhard celebrated his 18th birthday with his best performance of the season, finishing third out of 81 runners. He was in about 10th midway through the race, and then found another gear and picked off runners one by one with a strong finish.

Anderson, Hi-Liners Clip Falcons

September 9, 2014

Hanna Field is Devin Anderson’s world, and we are all witnesses to the Hi-Liner show.

Anderson ran for two touchdowns, snagged two third-quarter interceptions and returned one of them for six in Valley City junior varsity’s 36-8 Monday night trouncing of Maple Valley/Enderlin.

“Our line stepped up big, and we had Jake Hovland back from a concussion,” said Hi-Liner coach Aaron Heck of the Hi-Liners returning to strength in continuation of last year’s 8-0 season.

Valley City faced all-State talent-laden West Fargo in Thursday’s 7-2 road loss, but such a challenge is just what a youthful team needs.

“Many positives today,” Valley City head coach Matt Nielson said. “We focused on footwork yesterday and we were better today. We preached location on our shots and the players responded. The three pillars were not upheld to our high standard on Tuesday [a 7-2 home win against Wahpeton], but they were today.”

Singles
Dalton Ondracek lost to Brady Ballweber, 6-2, 6-0.
Brandon Miller lost to Kayan Farahmand, 6-0, 6-1.

Enderlin Scratches Litchville-Marion/Montpelier

September 5, 2014

Enderlin and Litchville-Marion/Montpelier traded points early and often in Thursday’s first two sets in Montpelier, N.D., but, despite Rhandi Larson’s eight digs and three kills, Eagle power prevailed in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-13) win.

Jacey Alber and Morgan Smith spiked three kills, Cheyanne Elsner two.

Caitlin Miedema and Tierra Velure swooped for six digs, Elsner five, Alber and Morgan Gentzkow four, Danielle Eichele and Smith two.

Gentzkow hustled for four assists, Alber two, Elsner and Velure another each.

Elsner and Alber also came up with a block and an ace each.

Deputies Take 3rd Straight from Vikings

September 5, 2014

A long touchdown pass in the final minutes at Lokken Stadium in Valley City on Thursday night gave the Barnes County Deputies a 49-47 win against the Valley City State Vikings, the Deputies’ third triumph in as many years.

“They used my strategy of putting every player on the field at once, so they won,” said Deputies coach J. Reed Anderson, a veritable leviathan in a sea of football knowledge. “[Viking coach and 1490 AM KOVC AM general manager] Tim Ost is wondering if he’ll ever win one.”
