ND Supreme Court won't block Fighting Sioux name election

April 4, 2012

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Supreme Court said Tuesday that voters should decide whether to keep the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname before the courts judge whether a pro-nickname law violates the state constitution.

The court's split ruling clears the way for North Dakotans to weigh in on Measure 4, a referendum about whether UND must continue using the nickname and a separate American Indian warrior profile logo.

The measure goes to a statewide vote June 12. If Fighting Sioux supporters lose, UND intends to drop the nickname and logo.

Building on experience: VCHS softball returns plenty of players from last year's state contenders

April 3, 2012

Valley City High School softball coach Jason Lindgren is the first to admit that his team is plenty young.
With only five seniors, there are numerous freshmen and sophomores that contribute to the Hi-Liners’ success.
But what the team may lack in age, the girls make up for in experience.
“You’re counting on a lot of younger people but they, the sophomores for example, have been playing a lot since they were 8th graders, they saw time when they were 7th graders, so they’ve got a lot of varsity experience,” coach Jason Lindgren said. “It’s not new to them.”

VCSU shows strong spirit in 1-3 performance at DAC tourney

April 2, 2012

JAMESTOWN — The way Valley City State University baseball coach Casey Olney looks at it, the success his team had wasn’t necessarily in the box scores of its Dakota Athletic Conference preseason tournament games.
In the weekend, the team went 1-3. The Vikings lost double header at home Saturday to Dickinson State University and Jamestown College, but rebounded with a13-6 win over Dickinson Sunday in Jamestown before closing it out with a 12-2 loss to the Jimmies.

VCSU track gets ready for outdoor season

April 2, 2012

There aren’t many teams that get over a month off from competition in mid-season.
But ever since the Valley City State University track and field team last ran a full meet Feb. 16, the majority of the team has been training for the outdoor season, which starts Saturday when members of the team go to Dickinson State for the first outdoor meet of the year.
“That was a good opportunity for us to train,” said coach Ken Frenette, who previously coached at Campbell University in North Carolina, which has a smaller transition period between the seasons.

North Dakota Outdoors: New fishing regulations set to take effect

March 29, 2012

I don’t necessarily consider myself old, but I do know I’m old enough to remember the drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s when Devils Lake was hardly visible from Minnewaukan, and one day I walked across the parched bottom of Hobart Lake in Barnes County.
Since a wet cycle started in 1993, construction crews have had to build up Interstate 94, which runs through Hobart Lake, because of rising water, and Minnewaukan today is nearly surrounded by Devils Lake.

Our Outdoors: Getting the most out of fishing photos

March 29, 2012

As the adage goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” a fishing picture, however means never having to face an inquisition from friends or foes at the local watering hole. While any snap, from a camera phone on up to top-of-the-line photography equipment, will preserve the memory and the proof of your catch, there are several ways you can make it a wall-hanger of a moment.
