VCSU track gets ready for outdoor season

April 2, 2012

There aren’t many teams that get over a month off from competition in mid-season.
But ever since the Valley City State University track and field team last ran a full meet Feb. 16, the majority of the team has been training for the outdoor season, which starts Saturday when members of the team go to Dickinson State for the first outdoor meet of the year.
“That was a good opportunity for us to train,” said coach Ken Frenette, who previously coached at Campbell University in North Carolina, which has a smaller transition period between the seasons.

North Dakota Outdoors: New fishing regulations set to take effect

March 29, 2012

I don’t necessarily consider myself old, but I do know I’m old enough to remember the drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s when Devils Lake was hardly visible from Minnewaukan, and one day I walked across the parched bottom of Hobart Lake in Barnes County.
Since a wet cycle started in 1993, construction crews have had to build up Interstate 94, which runs through Hobart Lake, because of rising water, and Minnewaukan today is nearly surrounded by Devils Lake.

Our Outdoors: Getting the most out of fishing photos

March 29, 2012

As the adage goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” a fishing picture, however means never having to face an inquisition from friends or foes at the local watering hole. While any snap, from a camera phone on up to top-of-the-line photography equipment, will preserve the memory and the proof of your catch, there are several ways you can make it a wall-hanger of a moment.

VCSU baseball team ready to start "second season"

March 29, 2012

As anyone in Valley City will tell you, winter doesn’t always treat springs sports teams well.
But as this last winter progressed in a mild fashion, Valley City State University baseball coach Casey Olney and his coaching counterparts at Dickinson State University and Jamestown College kicked around the idea of moving the Dakota Athletic Conference preseason tournament from sites in South Dakota to local fields.
But even those talks were done with a hint of caution as coaches waited to see whether their fields would be playable.

Vikings split softball series with Bemidji

March 28, 2012

On a cold and windy day, the Valley City State University Vikings dropped the opening game at NCAA Division II opponent Bemidji (Minn.) State 2-0 before rebounding in the second game to salvage a split with a 6-2 victory.
Game one flew by as both pitchers worked quickly and limited each team’s offenses. The Beavers gave pitcher Courtney Anderson a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and it was all the room she needed as Anderson held the Viking bats to just three hits in seven innings.

Following familiar footsteps: Casey Englehard among youth of VCHS track and field team

March 27, 2012

FARGO — Those who have followed the Valley City High School track and field team probably recognize the name “Engelhard.”
After all, Wayne Engelhard was a state champion in the 800 meter run, and more recently has been a two-time qualifier for the NAIA national meet at Valley City State University.
But this year, there’s a different Engelhard looking to make a difference for the Hi-Liners. Wayne’s brother, Casey, has been among the younger athletes to find his footing as part of the VCHS track and field team early in the season.

VCSU softball sweeps Concordia College

VC 4th graders win title at Spring Shootout tournament

March 26, 2012

Although nearly all the tournaments at the Valley City Parks and Recreation Spring Shootout basketball tournament were played in a round-robin format, there were times where it seemed to work out otherwise.
Take, for instance, the 4th grade boys tournament.
There was no bracket, but the championship still came down to one final game at the end of the day.
In the final game, the Valley City Lightning did what it needed in a 30-28 win over Devils Lake. It was the second time in as many weeks that the teams played for a tournament championship. Both times, Valley City came out on top.
