Hi-Liners bring defense, but can't sink shots in loss to Jamestown

December 30, 2011

JAMESTOWN — There's no question about what's ailing the Valley City High School boys basketball team.
"Our offense," junior forward Chase Carpenter said. "We just can't score.
"We're taking bad shots, forcing the ball into the post, just not doing anything great."
The Hi-Liners lost 58-45 Thursday at Jamestown High School. It was the fifth loss in a row.
Similar to the team's loss to West Fargo earlier this month, it wasn't necessarily bad play that lost the game. The shots simply weren't falling.
The Hi-Liners finished the game 18-45 from the field with no 3-pointers.

VCHS girls struggle all around in loss to Jamestown

December 30, 2011

JAMESTOWN — Valley City High School girls basketball coach Jim McDaniel had a hard time pin pointing exactly what was off with his team in Thursday's 62-46 loss to Jamestown.
Unlike the boys, who simply couldn't make shots, the girls struggled to overcome a concoction of turnovers, missed shots and early offensive success from their opponents.
"We were just kind of out of our game, out of synch right from the start," McDaniel said. "We just couldn't get anything going at all."

Minnesota Vikings expect Peterson back for 2012 season

December 27, 2011

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The athletic abilities of star running back Adrian Peterson led the Minnesota Vikings to give him a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the season started.
Now, they hope his recuperative abilities are just as good and he is able to live up to being the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Minnesota expects Peterson to be recovered from left knee surgery for two torn ligaments in time to start the 2012 season.

VCSU men ready for rule changes at Wesmen Classic

December 27, 2011

The Valley City State University mens basketball team had a largely traditional practice Monday when it returned from its short holiday break.
But as the team worked its offense, there was one subtle change — rather than running the shot clock at 35 seconds, the Vikings were working the ball with only 24.
It was a strategic move to help prepare the team for the Wesmen Classic tournament, which starts Wednesday at the University of Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Rise of the Raiders: Maple Valley girls off to 4-0 start

December 23, 2011

Entering this season, Maple Valley High School girls basketball coach Jeff Miller was cautiously optimistic.
"I knew we'd be better than last year and I knew we'd be able to surprise some teams," Miller said. "I thought we would maybe get off to a slower start and then start picking it up at the end of the year once they started playing together."
But after beating Griggs County Central 54-31 Tuesday, "better than last year" is a goal the team has already achieved.
