VCSU Vikings split overtime games with Dickinson

January 30, 2012

The No. 19 Valley City State University mens basketball team outscored Dickinson State University 8-5 in overtime to en route to a 71-68 road win Saturday.
In a rematch of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tip-Off Tournament consolation game just six days prior, the Vikings used balanced scoring and an overtime period to fend off the Blue Hawks for a second straight time.
The Vikings' balance led to four players finishing with 14 points or more.

Valley City teams win championships at local youth tournament

January 30, 2012

Valley City teams don't get a chance to play many tournaments in front of a home-town crowd, so Saturday offered a change of pace.
Rather than hitting the road, three local youth teams — the 6th grade B boys, 6th grade girls and 4th grade B boys — were among 42 teams in seven divisions that took the court at the Valley City Parks and Recreation District Youth Basketball Tournament Saturday.
The tournaments were played on courts spanning from the Recreation Center and City Auditorium buildings to the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse at Valley City State University.

Twins Manager Gardenhire updates VC fans on Morneau, Mauer, free agents

January 18, 2012

During Tuesday's stop in Valley City, Minnesota Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra emphasized the value of having veteran leaders on the team.
"You've got to have those guys in the clubhouse to take control of the people they're dressing with," Vavra told an audience of about 60 people at Trestle's Bar and Grill Tuesday. "We're off to the side, we're promoting, obviously, what they're supposed to get done on the field, but you've got to have a leader step up," he said. "You've got to have a voice, somebody they can relate to when times are down."

Lemnus comes through in Hi-Liners' win over Fargo South

January 18, 2012

The Valley City High School wrestling team isn't exactly known for its lower weight wrestlers.
Once you get to 138-pound class, you get into the state contenders, but the 106 to 132 pounders tend to be more inexperienced.
"We're really young down there," Valley City coach Brandon Larson said. "We've got some junior high kids going out there."
But in Tuesday's 40-33 dual win over Fargo South at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, it was a younger wrestler who came through.

VCSU women start slow, beat Wildcats

January 16, 2012

The Valley City State University womens basketball team had a slower start than coach Jill DeVries would have liked.
In the first ten minutes of Sunday's 74-65 home win over Johnson and Wales (Colo.) University, the Vikings only hit two shots from the floor, despite leading 10-9.
But, DeVries said, the intentions were good.

Milligen hurt, but Viking men beat Johnson & Wales

January 16, 2012

The Valley City State University mens basketball team didn't have the best looking win Sunday against Johnson and Wales (Colo.) University.
After leading the game by 17 points at halftime, the Vikings were outscored 30-17 in the second half, primarily because of cold shooting.
The Vikings still finished ahead with a 57-47 score and VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky was pleased nonetheless. It was the team's second win in as many days.

Barnes County North takes 4th, LMM 7th in BCT consolation games

January 16, 2012

The Barnes County North girls basketball may have lost 61-41 to Northern Cass in the third place game of the Barnes County Tournament, but coach Randy Hooey felt looks could be deceiving.
"This was not a 20 point game, at all," he said. "It was a lot better game than that."
Early, the Bison held their own and even had an 11-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
The rest of the half, the two teams went back and forth, with Northern Cass going on a run and BCN catching up. In the final two minutes, BCN's Calby Hanson had five points to narrow the Jaguars' lead to 28-25 by halftime.

Raiders Revenge: Maple Valley beats Valley City in BCT championship

January 16, 2012

There are some losses that just don’t sit well with a team.
For the Maple Valley girls, it was their lone loss of the year, 63-57 in overtime at home against Valley City Jan. 3.
“We’d been been thinking (about it),” said Maple Valley eighth grader Rylee Nudell. “We wanted a rematch ever since we played them last time.”
Saturday at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, the Raiders got their rematch with Hi-Liners and made sure the sequel turned out differently. This time, Maple Valley got the 52-46 win and took home the Barnes County Tournament championship.

Barnes County Tournament: Maple Valley gets second half win over Enderlin, Northern Cass advances

January 12, 2012

Despite leading by only two points at halftime of Tuesday's 52-33 win over Enderlin in the first round of the Barnes County Tournament, Maple Valley coach Jeff Miller knew his team was on the verge of opening the game up.
It was just a matter of getting the knockout blow, so to speak.
"There were a couple of times in the second quarter where you could feel they were kind of on the ropes," Miller said. "We had a five or six point lead and then we'd turn the ball over a couple of times and they'd be right back in it.

Barnes County Tournament: Valley City beats LMM, BCN advances over Griggs

January 12, 2012

Valley City High School senior Allyson Suhr opened the Barnes County Tournament with the type of game that any post player would love to have.
With a few inches of height over the Litchville-Marion Montpelier girls, Suhr was able to consistently low into the post for open shots and grabbed rebounds with ease.
In the 59-26 win over the Rebels, Suhr finished with 26 points, as many as the opposing squad. But she’s not the type to take credit for it.
