VCHS track team taking four underclassmen to state meet

May 25, 2012

Valley City High School’s April Berntson has yet to see the state track and field meet from an athlete’s perspective. Bentson, a freshman, narrowly missed making the meet last year as an eighth grader, but instead went as a spectator.
This year, she’ll be making the trip for the right reasons.
Berntson clinched her spot in the state meet with a fifth place finish in the 1,600 meter run at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet last weekend in Fargo.
“It was really awesome,” Berntson said. “I was just so excited and then everybody came and gave me a big hug.”

Column: It's never too early to talk about the Timberwolves

With summer just around the corner, things are beginning to heat up in the NBA playoffs, at least in the Eastern Conference. While it surely looks like the ageless San Antonio Spurs will face the up and coming Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, things are not so clear out east. As the Chris Bosh-less Miami Heat try to survive the Indiana Pacers, the aging Big Three plus Rondo in Boston, look to sneak by the opportunistic Philadelphia 76ers.

BISMARCK (AP) — The City Council in Santa Cruz, Calif., has voted to finalize a deal with the Golden State Warriors that will enable the franchise to move its NBA Development League team from North Dakota.
The Dakota Wizards have called the state capital of Bismarck home for nearly two decades. The team was bought last year by the Warriors, an NBA team based about 70 miles north of Santa Cruz in Oakland, Calif., though the team plans a move to San Francisco.

EMV softball clinches state berth

May 23, 2012

CASSELTON — Based on how things turned out the last two seasons, one would expect that the Enderlin/Maple Valley softball team be somewhat excited to clinch a spot in the first-ever Class B state softball tournament.
In both 2010 and 2011, when the sport operated with only one classification, the Falcons lost in a state qualifying game.
The girls clinched their spot at state Tuesday with a 21-5 win over Hillsboro/Central Valley in the semifinal round of the Class B South Region tournament at Tinta Tawa Park in Casselton.

Shanley beats Hi-Liners in extras

May 22, 2012

Valley City High School softball coach Jason Lindgren had mixed feelings on his team’s 7-6 regular season-ending loss to Fargo Shanley Monday at the Valley City State University softball complex.
There was plenty of good that came from it, but similarly some struggles. There were highs, lows, leads, comebacks. Not to mention the #3 seed in the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament was on the line.

VCHS baseball team ends second consecutive winless season

May 21, 2012

The Valley City High School baseball team closed out its second consecutive winless season with a double header Saturday against Grand Forks Central at Charlie Brown Memorial Field in Valley City.
Though the Hi-Liners dropped the second game 16-2, it was a 6-2 loss in game one, one of the team’s best efforts of the year, that impressed coach Trevar Hansen.
“That was a way better game,” he said. “We pitched pretty well, played pretty good defense and we hit the ball okay. That’s obviously baseball, but I mean that’s kind of what we haven’t done a ton of out here.”

The tennis team ended its season Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the EDC regional tournament in Grand Forks and will have no representatives at the state meet. The Hi-Liners lost 5-0 to West Fargo and 3-2 to Fargo South in the team tournament. The Hi-Liners pulled plenty of upsets in the individual tournament, including consecutive upset wins by Sara Gilbertson and Sam Coit over Red River’s top singles player, Katie Sween.
