VCSU golf wins title
The Valley City State University golf team had to share the team title at the Dickinson State Spring Invite Wednesday and Thursday at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson, but it was history making, no less.
The title, which the Vikings shared with Jamestown College, was the team’s first since the sport returned in 2009.
The Vikings had three golfers finish in the top four, including an individual championship by Taylor Henrickson, who shot a 152. He shared the championship with Jamestown’s Jack Bietz.

Local gymnast does well at state

April 6, 2012

It’s a warm Wednesday afternoon, and six-year-old Rebekah Kauffman is sitting on a couch next to her mother, Misti, at the family’s house in north Valley City.
A bundle of energy, Rebekah isn’t one to keep still for a minute — frequently glancing around for one of her siblings, then laughing and showing off her bright smile.
But as she’s asked questions, goes quiet, opting for quick, one-word answers.
“You don’t have to be this quiet,” Misti tells her. “You’re never this quiet.”
Nor is she that shy.

Vikings' bats, Shaw's pitching help split with Dickinson

April 6, 2012

By almost any measure, Valley City State University pitcher Ryan Shaw kept it simple in Thursday’s 11-2 win over Dickinson State University, the second game of a double header between the teams.
“I was throwing fastballs and curveballs, trying to hit my spots,” Shaw said.
Simple as it sounds, it worked. The Blue Hawks were limited to four hits and two runs, only one earned, helping the Vikings split the first two games of a four game series. Dickinson won Thursday’s series opening game 6-2.
The teams play again today at Charlie Brown Field with a double header starting at noon.

Valley City State University mens basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced earlier this week that Sedrick Jennings, originally from Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas, has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and join the Viking basketball program for next season.
He spent last season at Temple (Tex.) College and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Vikings.

Shaking off the dust: Hi-Liners lose 12-1 in opener against Red River

April 5, 2012

Starting the season off against high level competition isn’t an easy thing to do.
Though the Hi-Liners did what they could in a 12-1 loss to Red River High School in six innings Tuesday, the team left with plenty to work on.
Primarily on the defensive end, where eight players from last season took the field, with only one, pitcher Keely Fogarty, out of her spot from last year.

NDSU Athletics
FARGO — The North Dakota State University baseball team capitalized on three first inning errors to jump out to an early lead and eventual 14-4 victory over Valley City State Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State (19-5) had its first four batters go up to the plate before recording an out. NDSU scored five runs in the first inning off of three hits by Nick Colwell, Kyle Kleinendorst and Trevor Jaunich.
NDSU had five different pitchers throw with Anthony Kliniske tossing two scoreless relief innings and earning his first win of the season.

ND Supreme Court won't block Fighting Sioux name election

April 4, 2012

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Supreme Court said Tuesday that voters should decide whether to keep the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname before the courts judge whether a pro-nickname law violates the state constitution.

The court's split ruling clears the way for North Dakotans to weigh in on Measure 4, a referendum about whether UND must continue using the nickname and a separate American Indian warrior profile logo.

The measure goes to a statewide vote June 12. If Fighting Sioux supporters lose, UND intends to drop the nickname and logo.

Building on experience: VCHS softball returns plenty of players from last year's state contenders

April 3, 2012

Valley City High School softball coach Jason Lindgren is the first to admit that his team is plenty young.
With only five seniors, there are numerous freshmen and sophomores that contribute to the Hi-Liners’ success.
But what the team may lack in age, the girls make up for in experience.
“You’re counting on a lot of younger people but they, the sophomores for example, have been playing a lot since they were 8th graders, they saw time when they were 7th graders, so they’ve got a lot of varsity experience,” coach Jason Lindgren said. “It’s not new to them.”
