Hi-Liners swept by Devils Lake

May 15, 2012

It's not every day that a baseball team is forced to play eight players.
Nor is it a situation that Valley City High School baseball coach Trevar Hansen ever predicted he'd have to play with.
But in a 20-6 loss in the second game of a doubleheader sweep to Devils Lake Monday at Charlie Brown Field, the Hi-Liners caught a stroke of bad luck right as the team seemed on the verge of its first win.
Instead, the Hi-Liners had a game-ending injury to Brett Rockneberg in the second inning that forced the team to play short handed for the final four innings.

Home-field advantage: Jr. High baseball team wins consolation title in home tourney

May 14, 2012

For the most part, the Valley City Junior High School baseball team has played its home games away from Charlie Brown Field, instead, playing their games at Hi-Line Park.
It's a park that plays differently than it's counterpart to the direct north.
Most notably, there is a distinct lack of fences separating the play from the soccer nets and backstops in the distance.

Jensen led the Vikings with a .385 average and had seven doubles, 16 RBI and nine stolen bases. In the field he committed only one error.
He was joined on the team by pitcher Ronnie Blagg, who went 4-4 with a 2.31 earned run average. Of the 37 runs he allowed this season, only 16 were earned. He was second on the team with 47 strikeouts.

The Valley City High School tennis team clinched its seed in the Eastern Dakota Conference with a 6-3 loss at Fargo South Thursday.
The teams were playing in a match that decided the sixth and seventh seeds for the tournament, Valley City taking the latter.
“We will match up with West Fargo in the first round, with a potential rematch with South looming in the second round, which we are excited for,” Valley City coach Matt Nielson said.

Strong from the start: 3-run first inning helps Hi-Liners beat Fargo North

May 14, 2012

For better or worse, the first inning has made the difference for the Valley City High School softball team recently.
Against West Fargo Tuesday, the Hi-Liners struggled out of the gate and couldn’t catch up to the top-ranked Class A team in the state.
But in Thursday’s 7-4 win over No. 4 Fargo North, it was a different story.
The Hi-Liners opened the game by getting North’s first three batters out in succession, then came back and scored three of their first five batters to take a 3-0 lead that the team never gave up.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings moved to within a governor's signature of getting a new $975 million stadium on Thursday after the state Senate approved a plan that relies heavily on public financing.

Gov. Mark Dayton has said he'll sign the measure, meaning the Senate's 36-30 vote was effectively the final barrier for the stadium. The House passed it overnight.
