VCHS tennis ends season at regionals

Valley City High School senior Kierstin Lorenz (pictured) ended her senior season as the Hi-Liner’s only member of the All-Eastern Dakota Conference team. The tennis team ended its season Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the EDC regional tournament in Grand Forks and will have no representatives at the state meet. The Hi-Liners lost 5-0 to West Fargo and 3-2 to Fargo South in the team tournament. The Hi-Liners pulled plenty of upsets in the individual tournament, including consecutive upset wins by Sara Gilbertson and Sam Coit over Red River’s top singles player, Katie Sween.

VCHS softball wins
The Valley City High School softball team got an early lead and never let up in an 8-3 win over Devils Lake Friday.
The team had his all through the order with Jenna Coghlan, Amanda Tangen, Danica Diegel and Jessica Deholm each getting two hits. Denholm also was one of three players, to have two runs batted in. Keely Fogarty allowed ten hits but only three runs in the complete game.
The Hi-Liners finish the regular season against Fargo Shanley at 4 p.m. today at the VCSU softball complex. The two-point game will decide third place in the Eastern Dakota Conference.

NDSU Bison fall to Notre Dame in NCAA regional

TUCSON, Ariz.— North Dakota State rallied past 13/16th-ranked Hawai’i 9-7, but fell to Notre Dame 8-4 in an elimination game at the NCAA Tucson Softball Regional played Saturday, May 19, at Hillenbrand Stadium. Notre Dame plays host Arizona at 4:30 p.m. Central in the championship game.
NDSU finishes the season with a 38-22 record and matches the school record for wins at the Division I level. The 2009 Bison team finished 38-20.

Coghlan finishes at the top of the EDC

Valley City High School senior Jenna Coghlan (above) was the school’s only individual champion at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet Saturday in Fargo. Coghlan won the javelin event with a throw of 112 feet, 10 inches, which beat Fargo Davies’ Lexi Klabo by two inches.The Hi-Liners had one new state qualifier at the meet. April Berntson placed fifth in the 1,600 meter run to qualify for state. The girls team finished seventh with 31 points.

Hi-Liner track team hopes for more state qualifiers at regional meet

There are two ways for high school athletes to qualify for the annual state track and field meet.
One — hit a qualifying time or distance during the season. Two — get a top-six finish at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet.
Throughout the season, the Hi-Liners had no problems hitting qualifying times and have athletes already booked for eight events.
Saturday at the EDC Regional meet in Fargo, the team will likely get a few more.

F-M Red Hawks open season with a win

EL PASO, TX- Despite solid pitching from starter Erik Blackwell and three right-handers out of the bullpen, the Diablos fell to the Fargo Moorhead Red Hawks on Opening Day at Cohen Stadium by a final score of 3-1.
The Diablos scratched across the first run of the season to take a 1-0 lead when center fielder Kory Drew led off the third inning with a single. Drew advanced to third on a throwing error by Red Hawks starter Kenn Kasparek and scored on second baseman Maikol Gonzalez’s RBI groundout.

UND, NDSU discuss resuming football rivalry

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The athletic directors for the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State have been talking about resuming the schools’ football rivalry in three years, but more work needs to be done before the Fighting Sioux and Bison can meet again on the gridiron.
The schools have tentative game dates in Fargo in 2015 and in Grand Forks in 2017, UND athletic director Brian Faison said.
“Until contracts are signed, it’s still tentative,” he told the Grand Forks Herald. “We’ll be sending (NDSU) contract drafts ... the first of next week.”

Swinging for state: Hi-Liners hope to make most of regional tournament

Valley City High School senior Kierstin Lorenz has come as close as you can get to the state girls tennis tournament.
Each of the last two years, she’s lost in a state qualifying match at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional tournament.
“Heartbreakers,” she said.
This year, she isn’t approaching the EDC tournament any differently. Same routine, same goal — getting one more trip to Fargo for the state tournament.

Brandon Larson gets triple crown

Valley City High School senior Brandon Larson completed his second North Dakota triple crown April 27-28 at the Betty Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. A Triple crown is winning state championships in wrestling in all three styles: Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco Roman. He won the 195 pound folkstyle championship Feb. 18 in Bismarck, the 220 pound Greco Roman on April 27 in Grand Forks and 220 pound Freestyle on April 28.
