Trujillo, Asuncion Named 2014 Viking Football Captains

Valley City State senior offensive lineman George Trujillo and senior defensive back Pathen Asuncion have been voted 2014’s team captains by their teammates following the conclusion of spring practice, and two more captains will be named after fall camp.

Trujillo, an El Paso, Texas native, human services and psychology major and two-time All-Conference selection, returns from his 2013 team captainship.

Hi-Liner Softball Baptizes Devils Lake

Hi-Liner senior Paula Andel and sophomore Heather Knutson went yard on Devils Lake — Knutson for the first time in her career — as Valley City scored 27 runs on 23 hits and shut the Firebirds out on Thursday, 27-0.

Erickson, Turck, Garcia and Conley Commit to Viking Football

Valley City State head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced on Tuesday the addition of four student-athletes who have signed letters of intent to attend VCSU and play football for the Vikings this fall.

Linebacker Austin Erickson and offensive lineman Spencer Turck are both seniors at Devils Lake High School, where they wrapped up successful prep careers: Erickson was named All-EDC and 2nd Team All-State this season as well as being voted Co-Team MVP. Turck was voted the team’s Outstanding Offensive Lineman and was named All-EDC Honorable Mention.

Viking Season Awards Announced

Valley City State announced 2013-14 season awards in Monday night’s ice cream social, during which each Viking team honored their seniors and team award-winners with highlight reels.

“It was good to honor athletes and celebrate,” Denholm said. “I think the athletes like it, and it culminates the whole year.”

Athletic director Jack Denholm presented overall awards for the 2013-14 season, as voted upon by head coaches.

Hi-Liner Boys Golf 7th at Fargo Country Club

Junior Jared Lentz led the Hi-Liners with an 87 as Valley City took seventh at 375 for four event points in Monday’s Fargo Shanley Invite at the Fargo Country Club.

“We played in horrendous weather today, with the boys battling the wind, cold and rain,” Valley City head coach Buff Murray said. “Today was probably the least amount of fun these young men have had on a golf course in their high school career.”

Engelhard, Meland NSAA Track & Field Athletes of the Week

Valley City State senior Wayne Engelhard is the North Star Athletic Association Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, and sophomore Jessica Meland is the NSAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the NSAA announced Tuesday.

Jamestown freshman Bre Carlson is the NSAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, and Jimmie sophomore Jesse Hacker is the NSAA Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.

Riley West Signs with Viking Basketball

Valley City State men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced Monday that St. Cloud Technical and Community College point guard Riley West has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings this fall.

West, a 6-foot Lakeville, Minn., native who just completed his second year of collegiate basketball at St. Cloud Technical and Community College, was a two-year starter and helped lead the team to a 22-6 record in 2013. West averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 assists per game, and shot 34 percent from three-point range and 78 percent on free throws.

Hi-Liner Baseball Falls to Fargo South

Fargo South senior Cassidy Meyers batted in three runs on three hits in Tuesday’s early 16-2 win at Valley City before the Hi-Liners took a 3-2 lead but yielded 16 runs in the final three innings for an 18-3 loss.

“We didn’t hit much,” Hi-Liner senior Masyn Olson said. “We didn’t have many fielding errors, they just shelled us. But we’re talking better as a team, and our defense is better.”

Hi-Liner Softball Batters Fargo North

Hi-Liner bats came alive in the sixth inning for a 4-1 home win over Fargo North on Tuesday before stacking 10 fourth-inning runs in the follow-up for a decisive 13-3 triumph.

“We played well after a rocky start,” Valley City sophomore Heather Knutson said. “We found a way to hit the ball and extend leads.”

Fargo North Baseball Blanks Hi-Liners Twice

Fargo North sophomore Nathan Hegstad held Valley City batters to three hits to take Friday’s first game at Charlie Brown Field, 13-0, then junior Bryce Schroeder no-hit Valley City through five innings for a 17-0 win in the second.
