Blue Team Wins Hi-Liner Challenge

October 15, 2014

April Berntson realized a life-long dream of ending up on the Hi-Liner Challenge’s winning side Wednesday as she and the Blue defeated the White, 41-32 by virtue of combined times, at Valley City’s National Fish Hatchery, a final tune-up before Oct. 25’s State Meet in Minot.

“A good time was had by all, but not so much for the disgruntled White Team,” head coach Brian Engelhard said.

A FINAL DEFENSE: Shanley Junior Varsity's Pair of Late Stands Tops Hi-Liners

October 15, 2014

Turnover can be good for business, but not if your business is football.

Fargo Shanley ended five Hi-Liner drives with takeaways and lost a pair of fumbles at Hanna Field on Tuesday night, but it took a Deacon interception with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter to truly finish the Hi-Liners, 20-14.

“It hurts me too because you played your hearts out,” said Hi-Liner coach John Cunningham, who insisted that the superior team did not come out on top. “I want to play these guys again right now — if this doesn’t motivate you for Saturday, I don’t know what does.”

Sometimes volleyball comes down to making fewer mistakes, as was the case Monday night when North Dakota Class B Maple Valley, the pride of Tower City, N.D., home to fewer than 300 people, hosted 6A Park Christian of Moorhead, Minn., a city of just over 39,000.

Maple Valley and Park Christian traded the first two sets, but Raider resilience came through to take the final two back-and-forth sets, 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23).
