Red River (Barely) Rolls

Two-point Eastern Dakota Conference matches do not disappoint.

Valley City kept the first set close and stole the third on Code White night at the Hi-Liner Activities Center, but Red River kept their feet on the gas to snap the Hi-Liners’ 11-match win streak, 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 25-27, 25-10).

Claire Olson led all Hi-Liners with 20 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces, Red River’s Mari Rustebakke all Roughriders with 29 assists and seven digs.

Hart, Kawasaki Qualify for State Swim & Dive

Valley City junior Annie Hart and sophomore Camille Kawasaki, members of the Jamestown Blue Jays Swim and Dive team, are headed to Bismarck, N.D.'s Nov. 14-15 State Meet.

Qualifications are current as of Tuesday.

Remaining for Jamestown Girls Swim & Dive are Oct. 3’s duals at Bismarck, Oct. 4’s Mandan Invite, Oct. 9’s Jamestown triangular, Oct. 14’s meet at Fargo Davies, Oct. 23’s duals against Bismarck Century, Oct. 25’s Minot Magicians Invitational, Oct. 31’s duals against Williston, Nov. 1’s Marney Shirley Invite in Jamestown, Nov. 8’s Regionals and Nov. 14-15’s State Meet.

Maple Valley junior middle blocker Rylee Nudell notched her 1,000th career kill in an 11-dig, 10-kill, two-block, one-ace outing Tuesday night at Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page, but 5-foot, 8-inch sophomore setter Jana Mehus's 17 assists, 11 kills and two aces helped the Spartans hold for a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) sweep.

Lunn Takes 1st Motocross Win

Dylan Lunn, 21, of Valley City, N.D., clinched his first moto win at the Dakota Motocross Track in Jamestown on Sept. 20.

Lunn, despite the rain, took second overall through two motos in the 450cc C Class, his second year in the competition.

West Fargo Boys Hoops Tournament Nov. 14, 15

West Fargo will host a Boys Basketball Tournament Nov. 14 and 15 for boys grades 3-9.

A team fee of $135 guarantees three games.

Hi-Liner junior varsity tennis hosted Jamestown on Tuesday and yielded the Blue Jays a 6-3 win in the final match of the season.

Sam Coit’s 41 assists lifted Valley City over West Fargo, 3-1 (14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22) on the road Tuesday in a two-point Eastern Dakota Conference win, the Hi-Liners’ 11th straight including Saturday’s Optimist Tournament championship and 12th in their last 15 matches.

Claire Olson came away with 18 kills, 11 digs and a block, Brenna Dieterle 13 kills and a block, Charlotte Huschka 11 digs and an ace, Bekah Peterson eight digs and three aces, Ellie Winter seven kills, Madison McDaniel four aces, and Sadie Klingenberg an ace.

BROTHERS AND BULLS: Bull-Riding Brothers Qualify for Badlands Circuit Finals

For Jeff and Joe Bertus, brotherly love goes along with rodeo.

The brothers are both bull riders, and are good at it, too; both are ranked in pro rodeo’s regional standings for the Dakotas, the Badlands Circuit, as No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

They grew up in Avon, S.D., with Jeff the elder brother by two years. After
the boys watched the movie “Eight Seconds,” featuring bull rider Lane Frost, they fell in love with the thought of bull riding.

“We thought it was the coolest thing in the world,” Joe said.

Ayr Field Target Matches Begin

The Ayr Rifles Sportsman’s Club hosted an outside Field Target Match Saturday in the park in Ayr, N.D., on a sunny but blustery day when 29 shooters, youth and adults, participated in what is planned to be the first of many more Field Target matches in Ayr.

Eighth-seed Valley City welcomed ninth-seed Wahpeton for Tuesday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Play-In, then showed the Huskies the door with a 4-1 win.

“We’re riding this all the way to State,” Sam Jenson said.

Valley City goes from fightin’ and survivin’ to stayin’ alive as they challenge No. 1 Grand Forks Central at 10 a.m. Thursday. Junior varsity hosts Jamestown at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
