Jessica Meland NSAA Field Athlete of the Week

Valley City State sophomore thrower Jessica Meland is the North Star Athletic Association Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new school record in the hammer throw and qualifying for the NAIA National Championships with a 50.29-meter (165-foot) toss for the individual title at Friday’s Northern State Open in Aberdeen, S.D.

Meland, of Harvey, N.D., currently ranks 12th in the nation and finished fourth in the women’s Shot Put with a distance of 11.66 meters (38 feet, 3.25 inches).

Viking Men’s Golf 5th at Klosterman Classic

Viking men’s golf improved their team score by 11 shots Tuesday at the Jamestown Country Club’s Klosterman Spring Classic, finishing the final round in fifth place with a total of 651.

Valley City State shot a 331 on Monday but improved to a 320 team total on Tuesday, two days that marked the first and second competitive rounds in over a month.

Wahpeton’s 7-Run 9th Leads to Sweep

Hi-Liner freshman Garret Suhr’s seventh-inning single scored junior Ben Baasch from third to force extra frames tied 2-2 in Tuesday’s Eastern Dakota Conference opener against Wahpeton, but seven Husky runs in the top of the ninth sparked a 9-2 win and a 9-0 follow-up for the sweep.

UPDATE: Man Found in Sheyenne River Identified

April 22, 2014

Valley City State University President Dr. Steve Shirley said in an email to the university community that the male student whose body was discovered in the Sheyenne River Tuesday morning is Dan Buehner.

"Dan was a senior majoring in business administration and played catcher on the VCSU Baseball Team," Shirley said. "He was from Blaine, Minn.and attended high school at Centennial High. I will pass along more information as we have it regarding pending arrangements."

Search for Missing VCSU Student Continues

The Search for a missing Valley City State University Student presumed drowned after falling into the Sheyenne River Monday resumed Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at about 1:15 Monday morning when a raft carrying three VCSU students capsized near the Little Dam in Valley City.

Cole Honl NSAA Baseball Player of the Week

Valley City State senior first baseman Cole Honl is the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player-of-the-Week, the NSAA announced Monday.

Honl, the 6-foot-2-inch Moorhead, Minn. native, batted .500 and slugged .714 as the Vikings went 2-2 for the week against conference rival Presentation College. He picked up at least a hit in all four games, completing his two-day performance with a first-inning grand slam and two-run single in Saturday’s 14-0 series finale win.

Honl batted 7-for-14 with the grand slam and seven RBIs, scored five runs and stole two bases on two attempts.

Viking Softball's 8-Game Win Streak Swept Away

Viking softball’s eight-game win streak snapped with Friday’s 7-6 and 5-3 home losses to Dickinson State and Saturday’s 11-1 and 18-2 losses at Dickinson, N.D.

Valley City State remains a North Star Athletic Association-leading 8-2 in conference play and falls to 19-19 overall. The Vikings resume North Star action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m.-and-4 p.m. doubleheader at Mayville State. Mayville seeks vengeance after falling to the Vikings in April 9’s 3-1 and 2-1 sweep in Valley City.

Hi-Liner Softball Tops Devils Lake in 8 Innings

Hi-Liner softball needed eight innings to finish Devils Lake on the road Monday, but senior Dierra Diegel’s toss to sophomore Brenna Dieterle at first base foiled Firebird freshman Jesse Rude’s two-out bunt attempt and sealed the 5-4 win.

Trailer Crashes Into VC Apartment

April 21, 2014

Valley City police responded to a third incident Monday afternoon, when a fish house trailer crashed into Victory Park 18 Apartments on Fifth Avenue Northeast in Valley City. A window and portion of the brick wall outside the basement unit were damaged, but no one was home at the time.

A source at the scene said the trailer became disconnected from the vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Fifth Avenue, and swerved into the northbound lane before hitting the building.
