Crash Numbers Up

January 6, 2014

The number of crashes in southeast North Dakota in 2013 was nearly double the December average.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol Southeast Region, troopers responded to 209 crashes in December, compared to an average of 110 crashes over the last five years.

Sledding: Enjoy the Ride, Follow the Rules

While many locals hate North Dakota winters, some wait all summer for a chance to get out the sled and tear up the snowmobile trails that run through Valley City and beyond.
While snowmobiles are allowed within the city limits, some riders have been less than respectful of their neighbors, according to Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson.

Hi-Liner Wrestling Takes 9th at Bismarck

Hi-Liner wrestling turned in a ninth-place showing at Friday and Saturday's Bismarck Rotary Tournament at the Bismarck Civic Center, competing in a 28-team field that included all North Dakota Class A teams except West Fargo.

VC School Cancelled Monday

Valley City Public Schools classes and activities are cancelled for Monday. The school intends to be open Tuesday.

Travel Alert for Area

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol have issued a travel alert for the southwest part of North Dakota.

Cities included in the alert are Williston, Grand Forks, Fargo, Wahpeton, Valley City, Jamestown, Ellendale, Linton, Bismarck and surrounding areas. A Travel Alert means conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised of freezing rain causing icy road conditions.

A memorial service for Daniel Peterson, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Oliver Nathan Funeral Home has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Announcements from Valley City Public Schools:
Boy's hockey tonight against Bottineau has been postponed to Feb. 8. Junior Varisty will play at 1 p.m. and varsity will play at 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 8.

Boy's and Girl's hockey against Dickinson on Saturday has been postponed. Girls will make up their game on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. The boys date and time is to be announced.

Frosty the Snow Giant

John Borg and family had a little fun over Christmas. And a little help from some hydraulics. They transformed a pile of snow into a giant snowman. It’s a good thing that’s a five gallon bucket and not a magic hat, because if that Frosty laughed and played, he might flatten a couple of cars.

Kettles Were Overflowing: Another Record Year for Salvation Army

Barnes County's Salvation Army continues to raise more money each year. Breaking another record, the organization raised $58,047.54 this year, $18,000 more than its goal and $3,000 more than the amount raised last year.
The local Salvation Army set a goal of raising $40,000 during this year's annual red kettle drive and far exceeded it. Last year, they raised about $55,000.
"Words cannot say how humbled all of us are by the wonderful graces that God has bestowed on us again this year in our Salvation Army bell ringing campaign," said Lee Isensee, chairman.

Hi-Liner 8th-grader Rylee Bjork is the Dec. 16 - 22 Farmers Union Insurance Wrestler of the Week and sophomore Jordan Magnuson the Dec. 23 - 29 Wrestler of the Week, Farmers Union announced Thursday.
