Love is in Bloom

Bouquets of red, purple and pink flowers fill the Dakota Rose Floral building as the business has been preparing for Valentine's Day. The Feb. 14 holiday is one of the biggest to send flowers. Although the rose, Valentine's Day's traditional flower signifying romantic love, is the most popular on this holiday, the popularity of sending other types of flowers to loved ones is blooming.

Harley the Father, Friend

When Harley McLain operated an organic lawn care company called Love Your Lawn, his business card read "Love Your Lawn, or Kiss My Grass."
Harley was like that, according to his adult children Molly, Mira, and Matt. He used humor in every part of his life.

Zach Doty and Jordan Magnuson Advance to State Wrestling Semifinals

Hi-Liner senior top-ranked 182-pound Zach Doty and sophomore third-ranked 220-pound Jordan Magnuson advanced to Friday’s Class A State Individual semifinal rounds at the Bismarck Civic Center as the other 11 Valley City contenders enter Consolation brackets.

Hi-Liner Gymnasts Win Valentine's Day Meet

Hi-Liner hearts were happy Thursday night as freshman Taylor Johnson and 8th-grader Eryn Crump took first and second, 7th-grader Michaela Thibert fourth, and sophomore Brienne Roehrich fifth all-around against Wahpeton and Grand Forks in a Parents Night win, the final tuneup before the five-team EDC Championship Meet in Valley City, 6 p.m. Feb. 21.

Missing Jamestown Woman

The Jamestown Police Department is asking for assistance in their search for Ruby Grenz, 78, who disappeared Wednesday afternoon. She may be in a 2005 Dodge Caravan with N.D. license plates number HNW 560.
Ruby was last seen leaving a Jamestown beauty salon at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Ruby is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 138 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a rust-colored fleece Columbia jacket, red sweater and brown pants.

ON THE MOVE Hosting Nutrition Classes

Barnes County ON THE MOVE is partnering with the Barnes County Extension Service to bring three new classes focusing on food, health and exercise to the community.
Susan Milender, Extension agent, dietitian and fitness expert, will be presenting the classes in the Valley City Public Schools Central Administration Building at 460 Central Avenue North in Valley City.

Drivers Safety Course Set March 4

The North Dakota Safety Council has scheduled a driver safety course 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 4 in Valley City to help increase roadway safety in the region. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

VC, CP Talking About Rail Safety

February 13, 2014

Valley City emergency response and other officials will be meeting with a Canadian Pacific Railway official this morning seeking reassurances about safety of trains hauling crude oil in Barnes County.
The meeting is scheduled to take place 10 a.m. Thursday at the Valley City Fire Department. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

West Fargo Girls Hold off Hi-Liners

West Fargo senior guard/forward Cassidy Thorson scored 16 points and junior guard Alison Enno 14 more as the undefeated No. 1 Packers led the No. 5 Hi-Liners 38-15 at halftime on the way to a 62-51 win in Fargo
on Tuesday night.

Senior forwards Dierra Diegel, 16 points, and Danica Diegel, 13 points, powered Valley City as the Hi-Liners outscored West 36-24 in the second half but could not rally for the upset.

Valley City (7-5 EDC, 11-4 overall) hosts rival Devils Lake (2-11 EDC, 2-13 overall) 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

VCSU Baseball Preseason No. 3

North Star Athletic Association baseball coaches voted Valley City State University to finish third in the preseason coaches’ poll, VCSU announced Feb. 7.

VCSU received 13 poll points, slightly edging Dakota State (12) for third place. University of Jamestown (23 votes) is the conference favorite ahead of No. 2 Mayville State (22).
