Viking Softball's 8-Game Win Streak Swept Away

Viking softball’s eight-game win streak snapped with Friday’s 7-6 and 5-3 home losses to Dickinson State and Saturday’s 11-1 and 18-2 losses at Dickinson, N.D.

Valley City State remains a North Star Athletic Association-leading 8-2 in conference play and falls to 19-19 overall. The Vikings resume North Star action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m.-and-4 p.m. doubleheader at Mayville State. Mayville seeks vengeance after falling to the Vikings in April 9’s 3-1 and 2-1 sweep in Valley City.

Hi-Liner Softball Tops Devils Lake in 8 Innings

Hi-Liner softball needed eight innings to finish Devils Lake on the road Monday, but senior Dierra Diegel’s toss to sophomore Brenna Dieterle at first base foiled Firebird freshman Jesse Rude’s two-out bunt attempt and sealed the 5-4 win.

Trailer Crashes Into VC Apartment

April 21, 2014

Valley City police responded to a third incident Monday afternoon, when a fish house trailer crashed into Victory Park 18 Apartments on Fifth Avenue Northeast in Valley City. A window and portion of the brick wall outside the basement unit were damaged, but no one was home at the time.

A source at the scene said the trailer became disconnected from the vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Fifth Avenue, and swerved into the northbound lane before hitting the building.

CROP Walk for Hunger Set for April 27

Valley City's annual CROP Walk for Hunger is set for Sunday, April 27. The community is invited to participate by walking, raising money for someone who is walking or praying for those who walk, said Faith Lutheran Church Pastor Jolene Knudson-Hanse.

Bob the Dinosaur Needs a Home

Bob the dinosaur needs to find a new home, preferably in North Dakota.
Bob, a 64 million-year-old dinosaur whose remains were unearthed in the Hell Creek area of Western North Dakota by Al Komrosky of Valley City, was scheduled to be moved from Komrosky's workshop to the Barnes County Historical Museum last week: Komrosky even hosted a going away party for the  skeleton. But Komrosky later discovered the creature's massive head will not fit through the door.

Fire Heavily Damages VC House

April 21, 2014

No one was hurt when fire heavily damaged a Valley City house at 643 Central Ave. North Monday Morning, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath at the scene about 11 a.m. Monday.

Sometime between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. firefighters heard a report of smoke coming from the residence, Retterath said.

“I was at the state and they said smoke was coming out of the house, and there sure was, coming through a roof vent,” Retterath said.

No one was home at the occupied residence owned by Conrad Hoff during the fire, Retterath said.

UPDATE: Man Lost in Sheyenne Is VCSU Student

A Valley City State University male student is missing after three people fell into the Sheyenne River when their rubber raft capsized early Monday morning.

The accident happened at about 1:15 Monday morning near the Little Dam by Eighth Avenue Southwest. Two other men were rescued by Valley City police officers.

Officials are lowering the river level so divers from Valley Water Rescue from Fargo can use sonar to find the missing man, according to Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath.

Valley City State baseball split this weekend’s four-game home series against North Star Athletic Association rival Presentation with Friday’s 5-3 seventh-inning loss and 6-5 seventh-inning rebound win before Saturday’s 12-8 fall and a 14-0 shutout triumph.

Pizza Ranch will open its doors for business at 1066 West Main Street in Valley City on Monday, May 12. Local entrepreneur Bob Bergan and his son, Tommy Bergan, co-own the new Pizza Ranch in Valley City. The father-and-son duo also co-own City Lights Supper Club and Taco John’s in town.
