BEK Starting Work in BC

BEK Communications has started work on improving high-speed Internet communications in Barnes County, with Barnes County Commissioners last week hearing the company's request for an easement through the riparian gardens along the Kathryn Road south of Valley City. Kids: Drugs, Other Dangers Lurk in VC

Parents should be parents, not their children's friends. This was the message of Deputy Doug Muske of the Stutsman County Narcotics Task Force, who addressed parents and teachers of Valley City Public School students Monday.

Bus Company Says Obey Stop Signs

Dietrich and Sons, Inc., which is the contracted bus service for the Valley City Public School District, wants to remind residents that they should not pass a school bus when the stop sign is up.

Brian Yanish, transportation safety specialist, said the company has seen a recent rise in people disobeying the law and driving through stop signs on the school bus when drivers are loading and unloading kids. He said bus drivers have observed 24 incidents in Valley City since the beginning of the school year.

Viking Baseball Drops Final 2 Spring Games

Valley City State baseball put up plenty of runs Monday but lost a pair of slugfests to finish their Tucson, Ariz. Spring Trip.

The Vikings fell 15-9 to Williams College early in the day and closed with a 16-15 loss to Luther College in the evening. VCSU’s offense racked up 40 total hits and 24 runs on the day.

Valley City State is now 9-18 overall and returns with a 5-11 Arizona
record. Next up are four games at Dickinson State (4-18) this weekend with a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and a noon and 2 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.

Kirin House to Open Friday

Kirin House, a Chinese buffet restaurant in Valley City, is set to open Friday, March 28. The restuarant will open at 11 a.m. and remain open until 9 or 9:30 p.m., which will be its regular hours seven days a week.
Kirin House, located in the old Pizza Hut building at 1155 West Main Street, is owned by Allen Chen, whose father, Yike Chen, owns Great Dragon in Jamestown.

Chen said his dad has a good reputation among both Jamestown and Valley City customers, and he wants to follow in his footsteps.

VC Native Who Acts in 'Fargo' TV Series to Appear at Viewing Party in Fargo

Local residents have the chance to watch the premiere of FX series "Fargo," in Fargo, where former Valley City resident and an actor in the series, Tom Musgrave, will make an appearance.

Microphone Replica Stolen from Museum

A replica of an antique microphone was recently stolen from the Barnes County Historical Society Museum.

Not a real microphone, the replica is actually made of a coffee pot heating element and two sink drain plugs fashioned to make it look like a microphone. An NBC logo on the device is also a replica, according to Wes Anderson, museum curator.

"It is fake and has no monetary value," said Anderson. The device may have been missing for a week.

Valley City Feels Flood Premium Pinch

There's a pretty view of the Sheyenne River from the top floor of Brandon Nadeau's two-story home, where he lives with his wife and two kids.
But that view is getting more expensive for the Nadeaus, who pay $2,800 a year in flood insurance. That's up 17 percent from 2013, which came after a 14 percent jump in 2012.
