SVFA to Host Fundraiser April 19

Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals is gearing up for its annual spaghetti palooza fundraiser and hopes to attract new members.
Sheryl Solberg, SVFA's board president, said the April 19 spaghetti palooza, complete with a spaghetti supper, silent auction and Norwegian raffle, is the organization's biggest fundraiser that helps SVFA find homes for pets in need.
The fundraiser will take place at the Valley City Eagles Club from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each.

Josh DeBuck 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament May 3 in Montpelier

April 4, 2014

The Josh DeBuck Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will take place at the Montpelier School Gym on May 3.

Tournament brackets include 5th and 6th Grade, 7th and 8th Grade, 9th and 10th Grade and 11th and 12th Grade divisions.

9th through 12th will combine if entries are limited.

April 26 is the entry deadline, $40 per team. All proceeds benefit the Montpelier Athletic Department.

Viking Baseball Weekenders Moved to Sunday, Monday

Valley City State baseball’s Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders at Jamestown have been moved to Sunday and Monday in Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.

VCSU and Jamestown enter a Sunday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Fargo South’s Bennett Elementary Field.

Monday’s doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m. at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Weather and field conditions may further alter this weekend’s schedule.

Weather Tees off on VCSU Golf Schedule

Valley City State golf was scheduled to play at Dickinson this weekend and in Jamestown next weekend until Monday night’s flash blizzard delayed both invites.

As a result, Dickinson State will host a one-day meet on April 13, and Jamestown will host their meet April 21 and 22 at the Jamestown Country Club.

Valley City Express Wrestling Takes North Dakota State Folkstyle Small Team Points Championship

April 4, 2014

Valley City Express wrestling featured 27 competitors at March 29’s USA Wrestling State Folkstyle Tournament in Bismarck, of whom 17 placed as Express was crowned North Dakota State Folkstyle Small Team points champions.

Small Teams are clubs with 30 or fewer wrestlers.

“By our calculations, this was the most wrestlers we have ever had participate in the end-of-the-year State Tournament,” Express coach Aaron Larson said.

Chances Good for Moderate Flooding

Monday's massive 14.5 inch snowfall in Valley City could result in moderate flooding by late April, especially if the area experiences a fast melt, according to Mike Lukes, service hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

City Approves Flood Protection Plans

April 3, 2014

The Valley City City Commission unanimously approved phase one of the city's permanent flood protection construction plan during a regular meeting Tuesday.
The plan, estimated at $12.5 million, includes permanent flood protection in the Valley City State University area.

Jefferson Third-Graders Raise Awareness for Autism

April 3, 2014

Third-graders at Jefferson Elementary School released blue balloons into the sky Wednesday afternoon in an effort to raise autism awareness. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and interact socially.

The event was organized by Jennifer Cabezas, who has twin boys, Ethan and Shelby, in the third grade who have autism. Wednesday is World Autism Awareness Day, and Cabezas wants the community to know how many people are affected by the disease.
