25 Sing in Karaoke Contest

March 6, 2015

Twenty-five singers performed to a large crowd Wednesday night at the North Dakota Winter Show karaoke contest in the main arena. Singers competed for cash prizes and a chance to sing on stage before next year's Winter Show concert.

Lissa Meyer of Fargo was the first-place winner, receiving $1,000, said Katie Oakes, commercial exhibit coordinator for the Winter Show. Anita Adams-Smith of Amenia, N.D. placed second, and Jessica Benson of Fargo placed third.

Draft Horse Fans Fill Arena

An estimated 1,000 people nearly filled the North Dakota Winter Show Main Arena Thursday for the Open Draft Horse Pull. The arena was filled with a wide variety of fans, from senior citizens to parents and their children.

Muellers Named BC Farm-of-the-Year

The 2014 Barnes County Conservation Award winners were announced on Tuesday, with the Brandon and Nancy Mueller farm being named Barnes County farm of the year.

Pulling for a Cause

Linda Sorenson of Pillsbury made the first pull at the North Dakota Winter Show truck pull Tuesday in the breast cancer awareness truck.

Mark Compson and his crew readied the truck for his friend, a five-year breast cancer survivor, to help bring awareness to the disease; his sister Brenda is currently battling stage-four breast cancer. Mark will make the truck available to drivers that want to increase breast cancer awareness throughout the truck-pull season.

Plenty of Sweet Treats at Tasting Bee

Several area organizations, clubs and businesses, including Thunderbird Ranch Gourmet Foods pictured here, served samples of some of their favorite recipes for 50 cents a piece at Wednesday's tasting bee, a part of the North Dakota Winter Show's Timeless Traditions.

Thunderbird Ranch, a Pride of Dakota company owned by the Open Door Center, served wine slushes sans wine at the bee. The slush mixes start with real fruit powders and are complete after adding a bottle of dry white wine, a bottle of water and the slush mix and freezing.

Franklin Named 9-1-1 Coordinator

Kimberly Franklin will be the Barnes County 9-1-1 coordinator and will receive $48,000 per year for the job, or $67,000 per year including benefits, county commissioners decided 4-1 at a Tuesday evening commission meeting.

BC Wants Voter ID Law Clarified

Barnes County Commissioners will encourage state legislators to clarify acceptable proof of a complete residential address so that poll clerks will be able to explain voter identification rules to voters.

UPDATE: Facebook Robbery Victim, Suspect Identified

The victim and suspects of an alleged robbery involving a popular local Facebook sales site have been identified.

Andrew Adams, 25, of Valley City was charged in Barnes County District Court of felony robbery, a class B felony, for his alleged role in an incident that took place in a downtown Valley City parking lot early Sunday. An arrest warrant for Jennifer Schultz, 24, also of Valley City, was issued for her role in the alleged robbery, according to Barnes County State's Attorney Carl Martineck. Schultz turned herself in Wednesday.

Facebook Buyer Robbed by Seller

March 4, 2015

A traffic accident report may have delivered a robbery suspect into the hands of Valley City Police Sunday. The incident reportedly took place during the arranged exchange of an item purchased on a popular local Facebook sale page.

Approximately 1,000 people showed up at the North Dakota Winter Show Tuesday to watch the 30th edition of the NDWS Old Time Tractor Pull.
