Meland Sets New VCSU Hammer Throw Record at Wisconsin - La Crosse

Valley City State Track & Field opened the outdoor season at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, from which sophomore Jessica Meland emerged with a school-record, 12th-place Hammer Throw toss of 44.85m (147 feet, 2 inches) that beat her former teammate, Amber Volanti, who set the old record in 2012.

Meland wasn’t the only hammer thrower to have a great day: freshmen Mary Roscoe (29.79m; 97 feet, 9 inches) and Kate Roscoe (29.64m; 93 feet, 11 inches) find themselves on the Viking All-Time Performance List after respective sixth- and seventh-place finishes.

Hi-Liner Track & Field Improving by Leaps and Bounds

Friday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Indoor Championships at North Dakota State were a promising display of Hi-Liner athleticism.

“Setting 12 new personal records at the EDC Indoor was a reputable way to end the indoor season,” Hi-Liner head coach Trevor Bakalar said.

“Bekah Peterson had another good meet and continues to look strong as we move to our outdoor season. Bekah placed fifth in her first 400m run of the season and set a new personal record with a time of 1:08.22. In the Triple Jump her distance of 31 feet, 3.5 inches placed her seventh.”

The second edition of Paul B. Kannowski's “Wildflowers and Grasses of North Dakota” is being published as an eBook by Lulu.com, and as far as the author knows it is the first book on nature in North Dakota to come out as an eBook. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Chamber Seeks Applications for Rubber Duck Race

The Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for local organizations that are interested in gaining proceeds from the 10th annual "Duckin' Down the Sheyenne" rubber duck race, held every year during Rally in the Valley community days.

Viking Baseball vs. Jamestown Rescheduled, Softball vs. Jamestown Cancelled

Viking and Jamestown baseball cancelled their weekend series and will play a Tuesday doubleheader at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., the first game of which begins at 11 a.m.

The games will be broadcast live on KQDJ 1400 AM and newsdakota.com.

Softball cancelled their weekend games against Jamestown as well; their next games are a 2 p.m.-and-4 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader at Mayville
State.

7 Hi-Liner Track & Field Personal Records

Hi-Liner Track & Field came away with seven new personal bests in Friday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Indoor Championships at North Dakota State.

Sophomore John Halgrimson set his own Shot Put record with a heave of 40 feet, 6 inches for 12th place to break his previous mark of 38 feet, 3.5 inches. He improved his personal 60 Meter Dash mark to 7.49 seconds from 7.56 seconds, his 24.25-second 200 Meter Dash earned him eighth place, and his 18-foot, 9.75-inch Long Jump earned him 10th.

“I just go,” said Halgrimson of his routines. “If I think too much I get shaky, so I just go.”

UPDATE: Murder Suspects Arrested in VC

A man and his two adult children, all wanted for their role in a South Fargo murder, were arrested in Valley City late Thursday.

Arlen Clapper, 46; Tamara Leigh Ann Clapper, 22; and Alexander Dean Clapper, 19; all of Moorhead, Minn., were arrested on warrants from Fargo for the murder of Rolandas Devon House, 26, in a South Fargo parking lot on March 14. The three are being charged with class AA felony murder. Felony murder is murder that is committed during the commission of another felony.

Public Health, County Government Week Near

The Barnes County-based City County Health District will be joining local public health districts across North Dakota and the nation to celebrate National Public Health Week April 7-14.
CCHD will officially recognize the week at the same time Barnes County has its county government week, April 14 to 17.

Farmer Earns Donation for Wimbledon FD

Wimbledon farmer Betty McMillan recently directed a $2,500 donation Funded by America’s Farmers Grow Communities, to the Wimbledon Rural Fire Department. The donation will help the department enhance its first response vehicles.
