Valley City Woman Donates Proceeds from Doughnut Sales to Salvation Army

During World War II, the Salvation Army was known for giving free doughnuts and coffee to soldiers. Irene Haugen of Valley City remembers her brother-in-law, cousins and neighbors who served in the war being grateful for that gesture.

Now, decades later, Haugen, or known to some as The Doughnut Lady, donates proceeds from her homemade doughnuts to Barnes County's Salvation Army.

Valley City's annual community Christmas Eve dinner, held Wednesday, Dec. 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the St. Catherine's Catholic Church social hall, isn't just for members of the church ― it's open to all who would like a traditional holiday feast of ham, turkey and side dishes, and company on Christmas Eve. Viking Women's Basketball Tip Off Home Stand with 85-33 Win

Valley City State University took control late in the first half as the Viking women's basketball team rolled to an 85-33 victory over Trinity Bible College on Tuesday night at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Valley City State improves to 4-4 overall with the big win in the first of three straight home games. The Vikings never trailed in the game, but the Lady Lions kept the it close for the first 17 minutes. 

Viking Men Knock Off Trinity Bible, 74-59

The Valley City State University men's basketball team opened a five-game home stand Friday night, and it was good to be home.

Riley West scored 15 points as the Vikings knocked off Trinity Bible College 74-59, improving to 4-6 overall this season and 4-1 at the friendly confines of the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Don't Burn at Christmas: Tree Safety

In the past 20 years, Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath doesn't remember a Christmas tree-related fire locally, and he'd like to keep it that way. "Nobody wants that," he said. "It's not much of a Christmas if that happens."

Paying attention to some simple safety rules can go a long way in preventing Christmas fires.

Mitten Tree in 37th Year

The Valley City Cares Mitten Tree began as a dream Rosie Larson has had since she was a little girl and saw a tree in the window of a local bank in Detroit Lakes, Minn. That tree happened to be a charity campaign that helps those in need during the holiday season.

And so for the 37th straight year, Rosie has organized an annual mitten tree in Valley City. The campaign accepts donated mittens, hats, scarves and toys.

VC Woman Arrested for Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest

A Valley City woman was arrested Sunday on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after she assaulted a Valley City police officer.

Valley City police were called to a home at 923 Fourth Avenue Northwest, at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday by the recently-divorced ex-husband of Lindsey Thorton, whom he claimed was trying to beat his door down. When police arrived, Thorton, 31, who appeared to be intoxicated, according to VCPD Chief Fred Thompson, was outside the home, speaking in a very loud voice.
