New "Viking Card" latest addition to VCSU technology

Another academic year is quickly approaching, and faculty and students at Valley City State University will be immersed in a variety of changes throughout campus.
Known for being a leader in technology, VCSU has been issuing each student a laptop during the academic year since 1996. The laptops come equipped with software programs such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop Elements. Students also gain access to other software programs when they are enrolled in certain courses.

Barnes County Auditor McGough resigning due to health problems

Barnes County Auditor Ed McGough is resigning from his elected position after more than a quarter century, citing health problems as his reason for leaving.
"This job actually takes - to really do a good job - 50 hours a week and I can't get 40 in," McGough said. "When I did the elections is when it really hit me. I got sick because I was doing too much in too many hours and was too stressed."

NDSU Football Hopes To Improve on Championship Season

FARGO — The North Dakota State University football team finished the 2011 season on the best note imaginable when it beat Sam Houston State 17-6 to win its first national championship since moving to the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision.
It was a win that meant plenty to then-sophomore wide receiver Ryan Smith, a Wahpeton native who grew up watching the Bison.

FargoDome Sporting New Turf for 2012 Season

FARGO — When the North Dakota State University football team returned to camp last week, there was a noticeable change to the team's familiar digs.
Gate City Bank Field at The Fargodome is now sporting a brand new Astroturf GameDay Grass 3DH Stadium Surfacing football field turf surface, replacing old turf from years' past.
"It's going to be a great, great surface for us," NDSU football coach Craig Bohl said at the team's annual media day Friday. "It was about time we made a change and we appreciate the leadership in our community doing that."

Fall sports first practice information
With the school year approaching, Valley City Junior/Senior High School's fall athletic teams will soon have their first official practices of the fall season. The complete list of practice dates and picture dates are below.
The school is also hosting a parent meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hi-Liner Activity Center for all athletes and parents in grades 9-12. Team meetings will directly follow the general meeting.

Wetter Weather Ahead

Fall weather may make an early appearance this weekend as a cold front is expected to move though the area Friday and Saturday according to graphical forecast data from the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

Friday’s low temperature is expected to bottom out at 50 degrees with thunderstorms expected to continue into Saturday. The total rainfall is expected to be less than a quarter inch and the humidity will be low.

I was born blessed with the curse of caring. What an enigmatic statement that is. “Blessed with a curse.” Does that even make sense? When you are an overly-sensitive soul you may find yourself overusing words like: discernment, gut-feelings, sensing and empathy. The blessing in the curse is that you and I were chose to care. The curse is the burden the care exaggerates in those of us who aren’t created with an “off” button. How nice and comfortable life would be if I could just care for a moment and let it go. The curse. It’s never-ending this blessing of being cursed with care.

SVFA Seeks Volunteers for Walk-A-Thon

The Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals will be hosting its fourth annual Wag and Walk-A-Thon later this month and is currently seeking volunteers.

Tracy Lee, who will be coordinating the event, said participants will fill out a brouchure that has a pledge sheet. Participants will gather pledges from friends, family and neighbors.

Lee said anyone can volunteer, and they are looking for people to fill a variety of tasks.

VC Businesses are Infant Friendly

Valley City tops the list of North Dakota businesses designated as “infant friendly” by the North Dakota Department of Health with seven for the city, said Deanna Askew, Healthy Communities for the N.D. Department of Health.

This year the health department designated 20 state businesses as infant friendly.

Designated Valley City businesses are the City-County Health District, City of Valley City, Sanford Health Clinic, Sanford Health Eye Clinic, Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce, Valley City State University and the Circle of Friends Preschool.
