For better or worse, rivalry games tend to bring out plenty of unexpected moments.
Wednesday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, the No. 24 Valley City State womens basketball team was on the wrong side of the equation in an 81-64 loss to No. 15 Jamestown College.
The 24th annual North Dakota State Pinochle Tournament returns to Valley City Feb. 16 and 17 at the Valley City Eagles Aerie.
The event, sponsored by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce, is designed as a weekend of fun and friendly competitive play.
Chamber Executive Vice President Dawn Riley said, â€śWe encourage you to also bring some friends along with you who havenâ€™t been here in a while.â€ť
Chamber Office Administrator Kay Vinje said this yearâ€™s entry fee will be $50 per team or $25 per person. The deadline for signing up will be 5 p.m. Feb. 14, Vinje said.
KLJ, Valley Cityâ€™s engineering firm, recently completed a traffic study on the corner of 12th Avenue and Seventh Street SE. The area is located on the end of Winter Show Road, just north of the interstate. The intersection has heavy traffic from employees at John Deere, which is located on the east side of the intersection.
Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said that the results of the study signify that if the two-way stop signs on that intersection were to be reversed, traffic flow would increase by 37 percent.
The Valley City Rural Fire Department Board of Directors voted unanimously to continue with efforts to form a fire district at its annual meeting on Tuesday.

Along with Mixed Martial Arts fighting, the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook Off and Community Olympics will serve as kick-offâ€™s to the 2013 North Dakota Winter Show.
Winter Show Manager Dawn Riley said Monday this yearâ€™s cook off and olympics will take place Monday, March 4. The Chili Cook Off will start at 5:30 p.m. and the Community Olympics start at 7 p.m. Teams from all over the area compete to see who has the best chili recipe and best booth decorating skills. Prizes are also awarded for the many events at the Community Olympics.
The Department of Transportation has a funding shortfall within its urban roads construction program, which is what Valley City uses to help finance construction projects that qualify.
Typically, the North Dakota DOT receives around $240 million per year from the federal government, but this year theyâ€™re funded at about $108 million, Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said Friday.
The NDDOT distributes the funds they receive from Washington, D.C. to qualified communities in the state that need funds to assist financing constructions programs.

Barnes County students prepare for annual Spelling Bee on Feb. 4th at VCSU.
The 35th Annual Barnes County Spelling Bee will be held on Feb 4th at Valley City State Universityâ€™s Student Center.
Area schools will have a top speller competing in each of the two divisions: grades 5-6, Division II and grades 7-8, Division III. Barnes County spellers will compete in a written and an oral section. The top two spellers overall will represent Barnes County on March 22nd at the ND State Spelling Bee in Bismarck.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) has issued a Travel Alert for the southeast region of North Dakota including the cities of Jamestown, Valley City, Fargo, Wahpeton, Lisbon, Edgeley, Ellendale and surrounding areas due to bands of heavy snow creating snow covered roadways, icy conditions and reduced visibility. Conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised that conditions could change rapidly in the evening hours.
