Boosters Raise $15,000 for Athletes

Generous area farmers helped the Griggs-Barnes County North Titans football team raise more than $15,000 last month.

During harvest this year, 23 farmers from the Hannaford and Cooperstown areas donated enough grain to fill more than two semi-trailers, totaling more than 2,250 bushels.

The fundraiser was organized by athletic booster club member Kelly Hanson. As the parent of children who played football for the Titans, Hanson was musing with some friends last year about how to raise money for the team.

John Deere Breaks Ground on Expansion

John Deere Seeding Group broke ground Tuesday on a significant project at its factory in Valley City. The new $20 million expansion will increase the factory that was built 15 years ago by an additional 100,000 square feet, bringing the building to over 325,000 square feet.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple joined John Deere officials and Mayor Bob Werkhoven for the celebration.

John Deere’s expansion is part of a major Interstate 94 Regional Development Corridor project by the Barnes County-Valley City Development Corporation.

County Plans to Stick to 9-1-1 Plan

In spite of reports from another media outlet, county commissioners currently do not plan to take over operations of the 9-1-1 system by Jan. 1 according to Barnes County Commissioner Eldred Knutson. The commission will, however, consider taking over financial oversight of the public safety answering point by Jan. 1 at its next meeting.

According to County Commissioner Eldred Knutson, Jan. 1 was his personal goal, but the county commissioners will keep its deadline of July 16 for taking over 9-1-1 operations from the City of Valley City.

Annual Decorating Contests Begin

Valley City’s annual home decorating and business decorating contests for the holiday seasons sponsored by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce have kicked off, said Kay Vinje, office administrator for the Chamber and Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp.

Vinje said Tuesday the Chamber is now asking for nominations for entries in the two contests.

“Anybody can call in and nominate their own home or business or somebody else’s.”

St. Kate’s Holiday Concert Set for Thurs.

St. Catherine’s Christmas Concert is a traditional way that people in Valley City start the holiday season, according to Christopher Redfearn, Director of Choral Activities at Valley City State University.

The free concert will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Valley City.

“As soon as you hit December, everybody’s schedule just becomes very crazy,” Redfearn said. “We like putting this concert early in the season so that people can get into the holiday spirit.”

BC Food Pantry Needs Donations

The Barnes County Food Pantry is appreciative of all the local efforts from businesses, churches, schools, churches and individuals who have helped so far this season, but is still in need of food and monetary donations.

Jo Ann Korf, site manager for the Senior Citizen Center which operates the food pantry, said Monday dollar donations and more food are still needed.

Korf said the demand for services has increased in recent months, “and our fund is down.”

Didier Appointed County Auditor

Barnes County Commissioners appointed Beth Didier as county auditor during a special meeting on Monday.

Didier, who lives near Eckelson, is currently employed at the Valley City USDA office as a rural development loan specialist. Didier has a business degree from Valley City State University and worked at the Barnes County Auditor’s office as deputy auditor for nine years. In 2002, Didier ran for the office of auditor but was unsuccessful. This will be a homecoming for Didier, she said.

VCSU's Horner named top assistant in NAIA

When Valley City State University assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator Gregg Horner found out earlier this year that he had been nominated to received 2012 NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award, he was humbled but didn't necessarily keep it at the forefront of his mind.
"That, to me, really was the was the end of it," Horner said. "I never really thought that it would go on and I'd end up being named the guy."
Turns out, the nomination from VCSU head coach Dennis McCulloch wasn't the end of it.

VCSU Women Sweep at DSU Tourney

Two games in two days at the Dickinson State University Milanovich Basketball Classic yielded two wins for Valley City State University as they pushed their overall record to 5-1 on the season.
In their second game with the Blue Eagles in a week, VCSU's Brittany Lehner led the Vikings to a 61-52 win over DSU Saturday to close out the tournament. Lehner scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and also went 6-10 from the free-throw line.
