Throughout the years, professional wrestling has seen its share of face paint, whether on icons such as Sting, the Ultimate Warrior, or even the legendary Legion of Doom tag team.
But nobody in the business has taken it to the level that former WWE World Heavyweight and current Total Nonstop Action World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy has.
Every night before he gets in the TNA ring, Hardy, 35, uses his face to create his latest artistic creation, giving each audience a look to remember him by.

VCSU women lose exhibition game

For the first 20 minutes of the Valley City State University women's basketball team's game with St. Cloud State Wednesday at W.E. Osmon Field house, the Vikings struggled at times against a tough Huskie defense, but never let the game get out of hand, even mounting a story run to keep it close at halftime in the 70-45 loss.
But in the second half of the exhibition for the Vikings, which has no effect on the team's win-loss record, the pressure finally got to them.

Barnes County Music Festival

Band and Choir students from area high schools gathered for the Barnes County Music Festival. After working together for a day, the students combined for band and choir concerts.

VCHS Students Run DECA Store

The DECA store at Valley City High School is the place to purchase everything Hi-Liner including clothing, outerwear, and accessories.

According to DECA advisor Scott Hurlimann, who teaches business at VCHS, students are involved with running the store from helping to choose what Hi-Liner merchandise to feature, to operating the business during activities and one day a month.

Local Electrician Volunteers East

An Ottertail Power employee with strong links to Valley City is helping restore power to portions of New York state pummeled by Superstorm Sandy.

Brad Weninger of Carrington is the husband of Valley City native Lisa Weninger, said his father-in-law, Louie Nicoli of Valley City.

Lisa, a registered nurse with Foster County Public Health, said Wednesday her husband left for Long Island, N.Y., Nov. 2 with a group of 16 to 18 Ottertail Power volunteer employees to help restore power to vast areas of the state affected by the storm.

Brad works for the Ottertail Power office in Jamestown.

Church Holds Mission Fair Sat.

As a member of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City participates in many mission projects that benefit people in developing countries.

One group, called The Good Samaritans, focuses just on quilt making.
“We have a group of 15 or so (14 ladies and one gentleman) who faithfully sew quilts every Tuesday for Lutheran World Relief and also give to Abused Persons Outreach Center and others that need a touch of love with a handmade quilt locally,” said Janice Stowman, chairperson of the church’s women’s group.

VCHS Swimmers Do Well at State

When Valley City High School sophomore Annie Hart was preparing to take her block for her events Saturday at the North Dakota High School Activities Association State Girls Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday in Bismarck, she knew it'd be a bit different than any other meet.
On top of the packed crowd at the Bismarck State College Aquatic and Wellness Center, she was among those who earned the right to walk in the parade of athletes, an honor reserved for the top eight finalists in every event.

Leevers Joins Others in Food Drive

Leevers Foods is currently running a “stuff a truck” promotion, which started Nov. 5 and lasts through Nov. 25.

The promotion is an effort to collect nonperishable food for the Barnes County Food Pantry.

Rick Idland, general manager, said, “This is such a caring community, and there’s so much need out there.”

“I know everyone is doing their parts,” he said, citing the Valley City Parks and Recreation’s food drive at Ruckus at the Rec along with local car dealers’ “stuff the trunk” promotions.

Salvation Army Sets $32K Goal

Valley City’s annual Salvation Army begins its 2012 bell-ringing campaign Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving.

The mission goal of $32,000 is $10,000 greater than last year’s goal, a result of tremendous success last year combined with great need, said Isensee, the Barnes County Salvation Army chairman.

Last year the campaign raised double its goal of $22,000.

The Salvation Army is a Christian organization started in 1852 in England by William Booth and brought to the U.S. in 1880.

Official in Hit-and-Run Accident

A Valley City city official was charged with misdemeanor duty upon striking an unattended vehicle last month.

The official was coming onto Sixth Street NE in Valley City near the intersection of Chautauqua Boulevard, and encountered a large city truck approaching from the opposite direction. The official moved to the right and hit a parked car. After inspecting both cars, the official decided the damage was minimal, and went on. Presumably, said the official, the truck driver called the police.
