Blonde On The Prairie: The Blonde Warrior

January 4, 2013

This prairie branded me. I used to be just a girl trying to find myself. This prairie gave me a purpose. It wasn’t a planned purpose. I never aspired to be “The Blonde on the Prairie.” In fact –if you would have told me I’d be called that I may have just walked away talking under my breath. Some guy named “Bruce” gave me the name after he printed the first or second column I ever wrote. I only met him once yet the impact he has had on my life is epic. Something like nine years have passed since he first printed that name.

Shooting Range in LEC Closed

January 4, 2013

The City of Valley City has closed the shooting range that was located in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center building, City Administrator David Schelkoph said Thursday.

“We closed it (in December) because we had the Department of Health come in and they did a test; they told us they believe there’s too much lead inside the shooting area,” Schelkoph said. “To be safe rather than sorry we closed it down.”

Area Woman to Celebrate Her 107th Birthday

January 4, 2013

Henrietta Dotting sat in a recliner in her room at the Sheyenne Care Center as she contemplated the significance of turning 107 on Jan. 4. “It’s not a big deal!” she said to her nephew Duane Farnquist.

“It is a big deal!” he replied.

Indeed, Dotting doesn’t attribute her longevity to anything she did or didn’t do. Her mother lived to 94, so it could be biological.

At 106, Dotting is still sharp-minded. Even though her eyesight is nearly gone, she still spends many hours listening to books on tapes through a pair of headphones that Farnquist had to remove.

Top Sports Stories of 2012

January 3, 2013

Editor's note: 2012 was my first full calendar year as a staff member of the Times-Record, and what a year it was. Barnes County saw championships on both the state and national levels, and even the teams that fell just short gave fans a heck of a ride. Although there were too many sports stories to choose from, I worked with other members of the editorial staff to choose this list of 10 biggest happenings in local sports from the last year. With any abbreiviated list, there is sure to be a bit of disagreement.

January 3, 2013

Preschool children today are surrounded by violence. Much of the violence that children are exposed to is through television and other screen time. According to data from the Nielson Company, pre-schoolers ages two to five spend 32.5 hours a week in front of the television, watching TV, watching shows recorded by DVR, watching DVDs or playing video games.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has lifted the Travel Alert for the Dickinson, Williston and Minot areas.
