Impact World Tour Coming to Valley City

This month, 100 world-class athletes, performers, and champions will give their time to present a series of messages across Valley City and Jamestown, said the Rev. Foster Beckstrand, pastor of the Dazey Assembly of God Church.
The no-charge Impact World Tour will bring lively daytime school assemblies, followed by events throughout the region from Sept. 14 to 23.
Sponsors say the Impact World Tour is not an event, but an experience.

VCHS Yearbook Wins NYPE Award

The 2011-2012 Valley City High School yearbook staff received national recognition from the Minneapolis-based Jostens company which produces school yearbooks and rings, and other items, including the NFL Superbowl rings.

The latest edition of the VCHS Yearbook achieved the National Yearbook Program of Excellence (NYPE) designation for the 2011-2012 school year.
Kristi Shanenko, the faculty advisor to the yearbook staff said last year’s staff only had four people: Destiny Winkler, editor, Jenna Mairs, Alexa McCulloch and Arelle Krueger.

VC Sweeps MV in Volleyball

TOWER CITY — As the season has progressed for the Valley City High School volleyball team, sophomore Clarissa Olson has found herself in a variety of spots on the court.
But she's making the most of it, coming up with key kills up front but also getting crucial digs to help out defensively.
"She is coming around so much," Valley City coach Katy Van Dyke said. "She's young and she's been told what she needs to do. ... She soaks up that information and she uses it, then goes out there and does it."

Twisters Fundraiser Ending Soon
The Valley Twisters gymnastics team has a fundraiser finishing up this weekend.
Until Saturday, any order placed through Schwan's food delivery service will have the option of donating 20 percent of the sale to the team by visiting schwansfundraising.com or calling 888-SCHWANS and using the campaign code 40342. Orders can be placed until the day of the event and can be picked up Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Youth Sports Complex.

Guard Money Secured

The Valley City City Commission accomplished a lot Monday during their regular meeting, where they took steps in securing land for the National Guard and private sector development.

Jennifer Feist of the Valley City/Barnes County Development Corp. presented the commission with several requests, all which aid in the financing for the National Guard’s new facility and in private sector development.

The city approved a request from VDC for a portion of future sales tax revenue to secure financing for the new $31.6 million Guard facility.

County Makes Two Board Appointments

The Barnes County Commission met Tuesday and among other things, appointed David Vareberg to the Barnes County Weed Board and Andre DeLorme to the Barnes County Park Board.

About 10 months ago DeLorme, a VCSU professor, was a possible pick for the Barnes County Water Resource District Board, and was supported by Commissioner Phil Leitner.

Commissioner Cindy Schwehr said she supported DeLorme for the park board.
“I really like him,” she said. “He’s passionate about that river... I like him, I’ve worked with some of the kids he teaches, they like him, he’s just a likable guy.”

New Shopko Sign Installed

Valley City’s brand new Shopko Hometown Store will open for the first time Sunday, Sept. 23, albeit on a limited basis, said assistant manager Sue Martin Monday.

Along with Sunday’s informal partial opening, a grand opening has been set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 18, when the fully stocked store will be open to the public for the first time, Martin said.

On Wednesday, Jack and Cody States of Indigo Sign Works were hard at work putting up massive signs announcing the new store name both just off the Main Street West frontage road and on the front of the building.

Over 400 runners compete in Jansen Invite

After taking an early lead in the girls 4K varsity race at the Bill Jansen Invitational this weekend, Langdon Area High School junior Kennedy Rude was only leery of one thing — the end.
"I got kind of nervous because I've been out-sprinted at the end before," Rude, the No. 2 ranked Class B runner in the state, said. "Today, I wasn't going to let that happen."
Instead, she maintained her pace and her lead all the way to the end of the race at Bjornson Park Golf Course, finishing in 16:03, two seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

VCSU Football Wins Again
The Valley City State University football team came out on top in a back and forth game at Dakota State University
The Vikings got ahead early on a 20-yard pass from Derek Elliot to Tommy Zinke to make it 7-0, but then allowed 17 straight points. The Vikings then scored touchdowns on 14-yard touchdown run by Taylor Cino and a 21 yard pass from Zinke to Elliot, before Thomas Cortez hit a 19-yard field goal to make it 24-17 at halftime.

Red Knights Annual 911 Run

Members of the Red Knights of North Dakota Chapter 1 gather Sunday at the Valley City Fire Department for the motorcycle club’s annual 911 Run. The club, made up of firefighters from Barnes County and the surrounding area, raises money for those in need from its annual ride close to Sept. 11. The 911 ride takes place annually, and this year’s event took place Sept. 16.
