Valley City Might Change Stop Signs Near John Deere

KLJ, Valley City’s engineering firm, recently completed a traffic study on the corner of 12th Avenue and Seventh Street SE. The area is located on the end of Winter Show Road, just north of the interstate. The intersection has heavy traffic from employees at John Deere, which is located on the east side of the intersection.

Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said that the results of the study signify that if the two-way stop signs on that intersection were to be reversed, traffic flow would increase by 37 percent.

RFD Holds Annual Meeting

The Valley City Rural Fire Department Board of Directors voted unanimously to continue with efforts to form a fire district at its annual meeting on Tuesday.

ND Winter Show Kicking Off Soon

Along with Mixed Martial Arts fighting, the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook Off and Community Olympics will serve as kick-off’s to the 2013 North Dakota Winter Show.

Winter Show Manager Dawn Riley said Monday this year’s cook off and olympics will take place Monday, March 4. The Chili Cook Off will start at 5:30 p.m. and the Community Olympics start at 7 p.m. Teams from all over the area compete to see who has the best chili recipe and best booth decorating skills. Prizes are also awarded for the many events at the Community Olympics.

DOT Fund Shortage May Affect VC Road Construction Projects

The Department of Transportation has a funding shortfall within its urban roads construction program, which is what Valley City uses to help finance construction projects that qualify.

Typically, the North Dakota DOT receives around $240 million per year from the federal government, but this year they’re funded at about $108 million, Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said Friday.
The NDDOT distributes the funds they receive from Washington, D.C. to qualified communities in the state that need funds to assist financing constructions programs.

Barnes County Students to Compete in Spelling Bee

Barnes County students prepare for annual Spelling Bee on Feb. 4th at VCSU.

The 35th Annual Barnes County Spelling Bee will be held on Feb 4th at Valley City State University’s Student Center.

Area schools will have a top speller competing in each of the two divisions: grades 5-6, Division II and grades 7-8, Division III. Barnes County spellers will compete in a written and an oral section. The top two spellers overall will represent Barnes County on March 22nd at the ND State Spelling Bee in Bismarck.

Travel Alert issued for southeast region of North Dakota

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) has issued a Travel Alert for the southeast region of North Dakota including the cities of Jamestown, Valley City, Fargo, Wahpeton, Lisbon, Edgeley, Ellendale and surrounding areas due to bands of heavy snow creating snow covered roadways, icy conditions and reduced visibility. Conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised that conditions could change rapidly in the evening hours.

Survey: Most NRA Members Agree

FAIRFAX, Va. – The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action conducted a national poll of its members and found near unanimity among NRA members on a wide range of issues involving mental health reform and firearm rights.

Gun control advocates including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as various media outlets, have released data claiming to represent the views of NRA members, despite the fact that none of those surveys had access to the NRA’s membership list.

BCN Senior Wins Kindle For Reading

Barnes County North Senior MaKenzie Krueger, a student from the West Campus, was awarded a Kindle Fire by the school’s Title I Reading Committee Jan. 22 for earning 2,500 Accelerated Reader points.

Principal Joan Klein said Friday she figures Krueger had to read between 250 and 300 books in order to win the device, which can be used for reading books along with accessing the Internet.
