A new club, Diversity @ VCSU, held its first event related to diversity and inclusion Monday afternoon. In an effort to promote and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Abel Turrubiates, native of Mexico, gave a presentation on Mexican Independence Day in Valley City State University's Skoal Room.
The event, open to students and the community, was the first of many planned over the next two semesters. VCSU hired diversity and inclusion coordinator Nadja Johnson early this year to educate students on various cultures throughout the world and help students of all diversities feel included.
Barnes County is one of 10 Parent Resource Centers in North Dakota, with County Extension offering parenting classes to help families deal with difficult issues.
Amy Tichy, PRC coordinator for Barnes County told Barnes County commissioners Tuesday classes including â€śCrossroads of Parenting and Divorce,â€ť a Family Art Hour and a 16 week program targeting families at high risk for child abuse and neglect are being offered.

Barnes County Commissioners have rejected a proposed new campground off Barnes County 21 near Lake Ashtabula, in hopes Scott Cole can reach an agreement with neighbors.
Commissioners rejected the plan for a campground with space for about 20 units after about six Getchell Township residents said they were uncomfortable with the proposal.
Commissioners voted 1-4 against the plan, with Rodger Berntson voting in favor.

Valley City State University will induct three individuals and three teams into the Viking Hall of Fame on Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 4-6.
Brent Lick, Robert Maresh and Terry Corwin are among the 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees, along with the 1958 football team and the 1981 and 1982 baseball teams.
Players and teams will be inducted during the VCSU Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, Oct. 4, at the VCSU Student Center. A meet and greet social will begin at 5 p.m., with the banquet at 6 p.m. Tickets to the banquet can be purchased for $20 by calling the Viking athletic office, 701-845-7160.
Valley City State University opened the inaugural NSAA fall baseball season with a split Sunday at Charlie Brown Field.
The Vikings dropped a 6-0 contest to Mayville State in their first game of the season, but bounced back with a 9-0 shutout of Presentation College in the day's second game.
The games count towards VCSU's record for the 2014 season.
Viking junior Shane Ost finished in the top ten for the fourth time this season with a 152 overall, his third straight Top 5 finish dating back to last year.
Sophomore Ben Sorenson made the Top 10 for the fourth time as well with a 155 overall.
Senior Casey Colemer made his first top-ten finish with a 157, his best score of the year.
Sophomore Haley Christofferson notched her third consecutive Top 10 finish as well.
Hi-Liner golf hit the road for the Shanley Invite at the par-72 Fargo Country Club on Monday.
Fargo Davies won the tournament with a team score of 346. Kathleen Marsh from Davies medaled with a 76.
Valley City junior Kassidy Ronningen and senior Saidee Oberlander shot 105s, senior Sara Gilbertson a 108, Rachel Schueneman a 120 and Mikayla Gustafson 127.
Eighth-grader Abby Lemnus, sophomore Abby Ingstad and seventh-grader played at the par-3 course in JV action.

In Week 1 of Viking League bowling action, Pizza Corner went 3-1 against Enterprise, Tavern 94 won three games due to a bye, City Lights won split their games against 5 Star Bucking Bulls, and J&S Marketing was 2-2 against K&S Carpet Cleaning.
5 Star Bucking Bulls turned in the team high in a single game with 1,149 pins. J&S Marketing struck the most pins over four games with 3,124.
Jim Korf bowled a single-game high of 254 pins, as well as the high total for the series with 666.
Korf was one of many to pass the 200-pin mark with, single-game totals of 254 and 223.

Viking junior Shane Ost and Michael Strain of Jamestown are your North Star Athletic Association menâ€™s golfers of the week.
Ost earned Co-Golfer of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after taking third at the Lake Region State College Invitational with a 71 on the first day and 77 on the second day (148 total). and fourth in the University of Jamestown Open last weekend. He scored 73 (1-over) on the second day in Jamestown, the second-best round at the tournament.
