Maple Valley girls beat Oak Grove

January 28, 2013

TOWER CITY — It may be almost February, but the Maple Valley girls basketball hasn't had much of a chance to see teams from its district.
Friday in Tower City, the No. 4 Raiders got a reminder of the challenge ahead in a 70-51 win over Oak Grove.
Despite leading by at least nine points at the end of each of the three quarters, the Raiders got little breathing room as the Grovers constantly worked to narrow the lead, which resulted in one tie in the third quarter, but no lead changes.

Blonde on the Prairie: Wrong is Wrong, Right is Right

January 25, 2013

That mother of mine didn’t spank us, whip us, paddle us or slap us. I just remember her baby blues turning boogie-man black with “the look.” You know the look. Your wife probably gives it to you when you leave the toilet seat up. I give that husband of mine the look when he’s talking on the phone to someone and discloses something that shouldn’t have been disclosed. It’s a spiritually reckoning thing-the look, it is. It is a visual prompt to let you know you’re wrong. People don’t use the look unless there is a wrong lingering near.

My (Elevated) Life: If the Shoe Fits

January 25, 2013

I love shoes. Any kind of shoes, sneakers, flats, boots, whatever. But my first love is high heels. I own heels in every color and shape. I have purple stilettos, black wedges, and pink pumps. I own shoes with round toes, flat toes, peep toes, and toes so pointed I had to buy a size larger to accommodate my foot.

My obsession with shoes started early. When I was little, I had foot problems and had to wear ugly orthopedic shoes. I always had two pairs, one in black and one in brown.

Hi-Lites Hope For Another Strong State Performance

January 25, 2013

When the Valley City High School Hi-Lites dance team readies a routine for state, the end result is usually a product of months of works.
Months of dancing in Valley City's Studio 29 and the Hi-Liner Activity Center. Months of watching tape, looking for the little details. Months of competition, where crucial feedback is given.
But when the Hi-Lites perform their hip hop routine Saturday at the second day of the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill's State Championships, it will be the first time the routine is done for judging, the results of a late-season audible.
