Archery Training At Fish Hatchery

Valley City’s National Fish Hatchery played host to two National Archery in the Schools Program training sessions Thursday and again Friday, led by Jeffrey Long, an employee of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and coordinator of the state program.

About 10 people were in Thursday’s session, and 12 were expected Friday, Long said.

Long’s students included Valley City State University students, a Boy Scout leader, and teachers from Freedom Elementary School and the Circle of Nations school in Wahpeton.

VCHS Cross County Braves Weather for Hi-Liner Challenge

As the Valley City High School cross country team waited to start its third annual Hi-Liner Challenge race at Chautauqua Park Thursday, VCHS coach Brian Engelhard took note of the weather conditions.
Compared to the warmth that filled Valley City Tuesday, Wednesday's races were run in temperatures in the mid-40s, underneath the overcast and drizzling skies that lingered throughout the day.
"Welcome to the third annual Coach Knows How To Pick 'Em Day," Engelhard told the crowd of runners and parents at the starting line.

Shanley's Passing Ruins GBC Season Finale

FARGO — As the Griggs/Barnes County football team walked off the field at Shanley High School's Cichy Stadium Tuesday, the looks on the faces of the players nearly said it all.
As the Titans gave each other a hug and a handshake, seniors seemed to be holding back tears following a 47-15 loss to the Deacons in their final game of the season.
It was a loss that, though large on the scoreboard, left second-year coach Davy Zinke plenty happy as the team continued its improvements this season.

Weekend football stats
The Valley City High School football team put up over double the offense they allowed in their 40-14 win over Central Cass Thursday.
The Hi-Liners had 296 total yards of offense, 222 rushing, and allowed only 142 to the visiting Squirrels.
Anthony Olstad finished with 94 yards rushing on 18 attempts with two touchdowns. Shane Undem had 55 yards on 12 attempts. Tayler Lentz finished with three interceptions, one of which was run back for a touchdown and caught three passes for 34 yards, one for a touchdown.

MV Volleyball Loses Home Finale to Central Cass

TOWER CITY — As the crowd packed into Maple Valley High School for Monday night's match between the Raiders and defending champion Central Cass, The stage seemed set for a big match.
There was a packed crowd, covered in pink for breast cancer awareness month, with students and parents from both sides, and a Maple Valley team that held its own earlier this year with the Squirrels.
But Maple Valley struggled to get much momentum, which allowed Central Cass to go on big runs and get a 25-11,25-13, 25-17 win in the Raiders' last home match of the year.

Travel Alert issued for today due to high wind conditions

The North Dakota Department of Transportation has issued a Travel Alert for today due to high wind conditions. The strong winds may cause difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, trucks, busses and SUVs. Motorists are advised to use caution when meeting and passing vehicles as well as driving through strong wind gusts.

City Commission Discusses Valley Recycling Finances

During the Valley City city commission’s regular meeting Monday, Marcia and Adam Faul of Valley Recycling asked the commission for ideas to help finance their struggling business.

The rates for cardboard, their main source of income, have dropped significantly and Marcia said the business is barely keeping afloat.

“(Cardboard payments) usually cover a good portion or our expenses every month,” Marcia said, but now that their revenue is decreased, they’re looking for ways to pay for a new engine for their garbage truck and stay in business.

City Reacts to 911 Decision

The Valley City city commission met Wednesday during a special meeting to discuss its reaction to the Barnes County commission’s decision to move 911 operations to the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office.

The county voted Tuesday to regain control of 911 effective Jan. 1, which would make dispatchers county employees instead of city employees. The change also means moving equipment to a room in the Sheriff’s office and hiring a full-time 911 coordinator.

The Tolna coulee, cutting taxes versus improving services, saving education funding by replacing some local teachers with long-distance learning and public smoking bans were all issues discussed by Democrats and Republicans at Tuesday’s Candidate Forum.

SADD Regional Convention in VC

Hundreds of high school students from throughout the region spent much of Wednesday at the city auditorium for the annual regional Students Against Destructive Decisions Conference sponsored by the Maple Valley SADD Chapter.

Cindy Kapaun, who leads the group with husband Brett Kapaun, said the conference, now in its eighth year, took place from about 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We would have started earlier, but a bus broke down. We’re kind of the mom and pop of the whole group,” Cindy said.
