Tuesday's After Lunch Bunch bowling resulted in three sweeps.

Wesley Acres won four games against Farmers Union Insurance.

Bettin's Greenhouse took four games from Fairhill Properties.

Dirty Johnny's won four games from Dacotah Bank.

Maple Valley Rallies Late

Maple Valley volleyball ventured to Moorhead for a non-conference match against Park Christian School on Monday, a match featuring four sets decided by five points or less and a late two-set Raider comeback on the way to a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13) win.

VCSU Basketball Alumni Games Saturday

October 18, 2013

Valley City State men's and women's basketball will host their annual Alumni Games, free and open to the public, on Saturday at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Both Viking teams will play an exhibition game against former VCSU basketball players. The women's alumni game will tip at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the men will tip at 7 p.m.

Valley City State officially opens the regular season Nov. 1 and 2 with home games against Dordt College and Northwestern College.

LaMoure Beats South Border

LaMoure volleyball hosted non-conference opponent South Border on Tuesday night, dropping the first set but rebounding to win the final three and take the match, 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20).

LaMoure improved to 11-0 in the regular season — and 26-3 with tournament play included — to stand alone atop Class B District 5, five games above No. 2 Ellendale.

No. 5 Edgeley/Kulm hosts LaMoure in a District 5 rivalry match, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.

VCHS Harriers Complete Hi-Liner Challenge

Hi-Liner harriers competed in the Hi-Liner Challenge on Wednesday, the last team event of the season before nine VCHS runners go to State at Valley City's Bjornson Park Golf Course on Oct. 26.

The Challenge, a 1.5-mile Chautauqua Park course in 50-degree, slightly breezy conditions, put the Blue Team against the White team in a team points contest based on individual times.

Blue Team contenders were Casey Engelhard, Jamie Ronning, Caleb Reign, Jessica Ronning, Noah Plagens, Mikayla Wolla, Mikey Meester, Molly Dockter and Hunter Olstad.

Free Shows at Planetarium

Two free public Valley City State University Planetarium shows will be held Saturday at 1 and 1:30 p.m. in Room 309 of the Rhoades Science Center.
The first show is a 30-minute program called Finding Polaris I that introduces the audience to ancient Greek and Roman mythology told from a stars' point of view.

Another Roadblock for Farmers

Soybean harvest was in full swing when foul weather hit last week, stopping it in its tracks. But many area farmers who also have corn have not stopped completely, just shifted gears – or combine headers.
"You can combine corn in the rain," said Randy Grueneich, North Dakota State University Extension Agent for Barnes County. Any corn field on firm ground, especially higher ground, can be harvested. This is possible because corn headers are higher off the ground compared to bean headers which run almost level to the ground.

Jefferson Prepares Third-Graders for Tests

Jefferson Elementary School aimed to prepare its third-graders for standard testing during a pep rally Tuesday. Third-graders, along with students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11, begin the North Dakota State Assessment tests Monday.
Guidance counselor Judi Hillier said the pep rally encourages students to prepare for the tests in a number of ways.
The kids were divided into groups of about five students and given a test tip that they had to create a picture out of.

President Jefferson visits VCSU

President Thomas Jefferson, portrayed by humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson, visited Valley City State University on Tuesday evening, Oct. 15. Speaking to a crowd of 500 assembled in Vangstad Auditorium, the costumed Jenkinson presented Jefferson’s views on the U.S. Constitution, answered questions from the audience as Jefferson and described his portrayal of Jefferson and other historical figures.

CCHD Will Move to FCCU Building

October 17, 2013

The City-County Health District is moving to a new location in the current First Community Credit Union building. Theresa Will, executive director of CCHD, announced at the Barnes County Commission meeting Tuesday morning that the agency has signed a purchase agreement and hopes to be in the new building by this time next year.
"We won't take ownership of the building until March 1, and then there will be renovations, so I would assume we won't move until August," Will said. "I'm hoping if we're in by this time next year I'll feel good about that."
