Barnes County has been able to escape any reported positive cases of rabies so far in 2013, but five cases were diagnosed in the region, said Dr. Beth Carlson, deputy state veterinarian.
Tuesday Carlson said one case was confirmed in LaMoure County, two were confirmed in Ransom County, one in Richland County and one in Stutsman.

George Gaukler and his business partners in Valley City's Straus Mall are getting ready for a Sept. 1 public opening for the renovated downtown centerpiece.
Wednesday Gaukler said nearly all work on the structure was completed but the cleaning.
Gaukler is lead partner in Straus Mall Property LLC, the company owning the mall.

Valley City Public School superintendent Dean Koppelman gave a start of the school year report Monday during the school board's regular meeting.
The board addressed technology updates, including a new speaker system at Hanna Field, and two positions still needing filled, the nutrition services director and a family and consumer sciences teacher.

On Thursday, the Valley City Public Schools will conduct its 2013-14 baseline concussion management tests for 10th graders who plan to participate in fall sports as well as any new students in grades 9-12 who plan to participate in fall sports.
Testing will run from 10 to 11 a.m. Students should report to the computer lab by 10 a.m.
Testing for seventh graders and new junior high students who plan to participate in fall sports will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the junior high computer lab.
An accident Wednesday morning in southern Barnes County east of Litchville claimed the lives of two people.
The accident occurred at about 9 a.m. at the intersection of North Dakota Highway 1 and North Dakota Highway 46. A semi going eastbound on highway 46 failed to stop at the intersection of highway 1. A northbound truck struck the eastbound truck, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. Both trucks came to rest in the northeast ditch of the interchange. Both drivers died on the scene. One driver was wearing seatbelts while the other was not.
Shirley Olson of Valley City was the winner of $1,000 in gas certificates at the Valley City Times-Record Free Gas Giveaway held at the Valley City Eagles Club Monday.

Tydise Reed Peltier, 39, has registered as a sex offender in Valley City. Peltier's registered residence is 250 3rd Avenue, Apartment 13, Valley City.
Peltier is a lifetime offender assessed at a moderate risk to reoffend.
Peltier was convicted in 1997 of abusive sexual contact without permission for having intercourse with a nine-year-old girl whom he gave a sexually transmitted disease.
In 2008 Peltier was convicted of sexual assault and solicitation of a minor after having sex with a 17-year-old developmentally disabled girl who was pregnant with his child.
