Pump, Dig, Then Hope

June 24, 2013

Following a Thursday evening torrential rainstorm, scattered homes and apartments in Valley City Friday looked to be holding moving sales as couches, beds, throw rugs and much else were placed under the blue sky in the sun to dry, while hoses snaked along lawns and roads dispersing basement water into the streets. Some downtown business spent the morning pumping out, too. But down at the Iron Stallion, owner Brian Mindt was doleful that he would ever be dry.

Tornado, Hail, Heavy Rain Hit Barnes County

June 24, 2013

Mother Nature struck Valley City and Barnes County with a vengeance Thursday, with a tornado reported near Rogers, hail as large as 1.5 inches in diameter dropping in the city and 6.78 inches of rainfall just northwest of Valley City.
Valley City State University reported more than 4 inches of rain had fallen as of about 9 p.m. Thursday.

Relay for Life Held Friday

Cancer survivors, caretakers, friends and family walked together Friday to fight against cancer during the Barnes County Relay for Life.
In a new downtown location, the Relay was held Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight on Central Avenue. The evening started with a survivors reception at 5 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.
Funds raised from the annual event go to the American Cancer Society, which sponsors Relay for Life, to find cures and fight back against cancer.
Not only does the Relay raise funds and awareness of cancer, it gives survivors a chance to share their stories.

Valley City Police say Matthew Kidd, the inmate who escaped from the Barnes County Jail Thursday, has been caught and taken into custody. Check our website tomorrow for more details.

Pennies For The Pantry

June 21, 2013

The Sheyenne Care Center Mission Committee realizing the need for donations of cash and product for the Barnes County Food Pantry recently held a “Penny War” for the staff to participate in.
The entire cash donation made to the food pantry was $213.84 along with several bags of groceries and paper goods. The winning team was the staff in the Sheyenne Care Center's Special Care Unit, which raised $75.40.

Coffee Shop, Community Center to Open in VC

June 21, 2013

A new coffee shop that will also be a center for arts is slated to open in Valley City a couple months.
The Vault will be a self-service coffee shop and community center located in the old Stavanger building on Central Avenue.
Owners Dave and Kim "Kyly" Brekke will operate the business in a building that Paul Stenshoel owns.
Brekke said Stenshoel was very helpful in finishing the historical reconstruction of the room, which they plan to maintain as a 1920s bank motif.

Breaking News: Prisoner Escapes Custody

June 20, 2013

The Barnes County Sheriff's Department and the Valley City Police Department are searching for Matthew Kidd, 26, who escaped from the Barnes County Jail earlier today. Kidd is 5'11" with sandy blond hair. He has two unidentified tattoos on his left arm, a bear tattoo on his right arm and "A&M" tattooed on his right leg.
Kidd escaped while being taken to recreation: officials believe he is still in the Valley City Area. Kidd is not considered a danger to the public. Anyone with information regarding Kidd or the escape should call the Valley City Police Department at 701-845-3110 or 9-1-1.

CCHD Targets Impaired Driving

Residents and local law enforcement teamed up to launch the Neighbor Road Watch program the night of June 15, at a Rally in the Valley street dance, in an effort to crack down on impaired driving.
Anyone interested in participating in the Neighbor Road Watch program is encouraged to contact the Traffic Safety Program at City-County Health District at 845-8518.

Heuser Takes First in Duck Race

June 20, 2013

Keith Heuser, No. 275 in the Ducking Down the Sheyenne race, took first place in the contest that took place June 15 during the Rally in the Valley.
No. 2 in the race was Judy Karch, who took home $200 in Chamber Bucks as her prize.
The third-place finisher was Deverne Hoggarth, who received $100 in Chamber Bucks as his prize.

Schools Accredited

Building principals within the Valley City Public School district shared its annual accreditation report Monday during the school board's regular meeting.
The schools were evaluated on five standards, which are purpose and direction; governance and leadership; teaching and assessing for learning; resources and support systems; and using results for continuous improvement. The team interviewed students for part of its process.
