Valley City State, NSAA 5-Star Champions of Character

The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) is an NAIA Five-Star Champions of Character Conference, a distinction bestowed upon conferences in which 60 percent of the member institutions earn Champions of Character Five-Star Institution status.

Through the Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment with every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

VOLLEYBALL: LaMoure Digs Ellendale

LaMoure volleyball visited Ellendale on Thursday night and left with a 3-1 (25-10, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16) win, powered by the Loboes' 86 total digs in the match.

LaMoure Stats:

Jade Wagner dealt 17 assists, served two aces and swooped for five digs.

Jackie Meiklejohn added 18 assists and five digs.

Courtney Carlson's 16 kills led the Loboes. She served three aces and notched 23 digs as well.

Anna Holen provided eight kills, four aces, four blocks and 23 digs.

Talitha Hirschkorn spiked six kills and blocked three shots.

VOLLEYBALL: Edgeley Kulm Sweeps Litchville-Marion/Montpelier

Litchville-Marion/Montpelier volleyball hosted Edgeley Kulm on Thursday night, hanging tough in the second and third sets but dropping the match, 3-0 (12-25, 21-25, 18-25).

LMM Stats

Tasha Piehl led LMM with 19 digs, paired with two aces.

Samantha Haakenson swooped for seven digs.

Rhandi Larson recorded five digs and five kills.

Tanys Ulmer's nine assists led LMM, combined with four blocks, three kills, two digs and two aces.

Courtenay Miedema notched two digs.

Morgan Gentzkow dealt five assists and four digs.

Burchill Optimistic on Grain Project

Thursday, Nyle Burchill said he was optimistic that a proposed grain-handling facility with a loop railroad track could be built in the Pillsbury area.
On Monday Barnes County commissioners told Burchill about $6,000 in back taxes would have to be paid on land owned by Doris Smith before the grain-handling facility could be constructed by the Arthur Companies of Arthur, N.D.

Barnes County Jail Overcrowded

Barnes County States Attorney Lee Grossman is trying to come up with a solution to an overcrowded Barnes County jail.
Thursday he said, “the jail houses 30 to 32, and many of the inmates can't make bail. Less than 10 are serving sentences, and the rest are are (awaiting) court hearings because they can't meet bail, and a couple are awaiting extradition to other states.”

Bond Set at $1 Million for Murder Suspect

Cedric Chappell, a Valley City State University student accused of killing one man and injuring another in Minneapolis last weekend, did not waive extradition to Minnesota Wednesday, but instead asked for an extradition hearing.
Judge Jay Schmitz set Chappell's bond at $1 million at the request of Barnes County State's Attorney Lee Grossman at the recommendation of the State of Minnesota. Grossman explained to the court that not only did he consider Chappell a danger to the community, but Chappell may also be in danger from those who may seek retribution.

Local Student Earns Large ROTC Scholarship

Former Litchville man and University of North Dakota student Sean Opdahl received a $27,500 Army ROTC scholarship.
Opdahl, a junior at UND, said he received the scholarship after committing to stay in the National Guard.
His major is secondary social studies education, and he is involved with a campus and military ministry.

The Vault Coffee Shop and Bakery Grand Opening Set for Tomorrow

The Vault coffee shop and bakery opens its doors Friday at 11:30 a.m. After the ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m there will be free samples of baked goods. On opening day The Vault will be serving sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, pretzels, mini cupcakes, pizza rolls, pumpkin truffles and rock candy.

The Vault is owned and operated by Kimberly “Kyly” Brekke and is the result of four years of restoration by her husband, David Brekke. The Vault is on the main floor of The Stavanger Building, which was originally built as The Bank of Valley City in 1919.
