June 17, 2014

Mud Fun

June 17, 2014

A small concession of umbrellas sold out at five bucks a piece, and for a few minutes that five bucks was a good investment, when a small shower stayed overhead just long enough to dampen any dust and freshen the pit, which was, literally, already waist-deep in body-sucking, boot-stealing gumbo stew. And ready for magnificent beasts with elegant mechanics producing exquisite noise while boiling the muddy slop on tractor tires.

June 16, 2014

Valley City Babe Ruth beat Lisbon twice on the road Thursday night, coming back from a 9-5 fourth-inning deficit for a nine-inning 12-9 District win and surviving a three-run third frame in the 6-3 non-District finisher.

“We didn’t come out playing our best,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We were just kind of going through the motions and not putting anything really into it. We left too many runners on base and didn’t execute some of the little things that we need to be doing.”

Carrington Takes Pizza Corner Crown

June 16, 2014

Drew Oberlander’s third-inning single had Valley City Babe Ruth up 3-2 in Sunday’s Pizza Corner Classic championship, but Carrington’s two-run single in the fourth sparked an 8-4 trophy triumph.

“We didn’t play our best baseball and, when you’re playing a good team like Carrington, if you don’t play well, you won’t beat a good team,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We made too many mistakes
out there: fielding errors, throwing errors, pitching errors, and Carrington, being the good team they are, took advantage of them.”
