Post 60 Splits with Casselton

July 9, 2014

Legion Post 60 found balance in Tuesday’s League game against visiting Casselton, stacking up 13 hits and allowing only two in a 9-4 win before Casselton scored eight runs between the fourth and fifth innings of the non-Leaguer for the 9-3 win.

“We’re never going to be a team that doesn’t hit the ball,” said Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema of Valley City’s aggressive attitude in the opener.

Post 60 completes the season series 2-1 against Casselton, having taken June 24’s League game 9-6 on the road before the non-League game was not completed with an 8-5 Casselton lead.

Johnson, Rodriguez off to Tryout Camp in Mandan

July 8, 2014

Nate Rodriguez and Jesse Johnson received invitation letters to Tuesday’s major league tryout camp at the Mandan Memorial Ballpark in South Mandan, N.D.

Rodriguez, the upcoming sophomore of this summer’s Babe Ruth team, and Johnson, the to-be Enderlin-Maple Valley junior, of Legion Post 60, didn’t see it coming.

“I had no idea it existed until I got the letter,” said Johnson, nervous and excited to partake in his first such event and to get his name out to scouts. “Maybe some scouts saw us at Babe Ruth State last year.”

“It’s something the AmVets have done for years,” said Gary D. Schlagel, Commander of Willis W. Weber AmVets Post 3. “It’s quite an accomplishment. Anytime we can do anything for the youth and the community, it’s our way of recognizing them.”

Rallies on the Storm: Babe Ruth Season-Sweeps Lisbon

July 8, 2014

Lisbon came out swinging and led 1-0 after a District inning Monday at Charlie Brown Field, but Valley City responded to finish a 17-7 win in the sixth on 18 total hits.

Down 7-1 midway through the non-District third and facing wind and rain from the northwest, Valley City tacked on seven runs in the home half for walk-off, three-inning 8-7 win.

“Our bats came alive for us today, and especially piling on hits from consecutive batters helped out,” Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes said. “Our middle five are really swinging some good sticks.”
