A fire that destroyed the home of John and Linda Schonert on Fourth Avenue Southwest in Valley City last week has been determined to have been started by space heaters in the basement, according to Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath.

Valley City Stateâ€™s Aaron Duske is the fifth North Star Athletic Association Menâ€™s Basketball Player of the Week, the NSAA announced Monday.
Duske, the 6-foot-4 senior guard from Buffalo Minn., averaged 20 points, six rebounds, two assists, 1.5 blocks and .5 steals per game as VCSU split a pair of NSAA conference home games with a 71-69 loss to rival Jamestown on Jan. 29 and an 88-63 win over Dakota State on Saturday.
Valley City High School seniors Madison Taylor, Dustin Lindgren, Austin Berg and Austen Meyer appeared at the Hi-Liner Activity Center Wednesday afternoon, in honor of National Signing Day, to finalize their collegiate letters of intent.
Taylor, an outside hitter, will attend and play volleyball for Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D. Lindgren, a fullback/linebacker, signed with Valley City State football, pitchers Berg and Meyer with Viking baseball.
Barnes County Commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday to end Veterans Service Officer Scott Crumps six-month trial period and hire him on as a permanent employee after rejecting a recommendation by Commissioner Phil Leitner to extend the probationary period. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.
Barnes County Relay for Life co-chairs this year are Lisa McCulloch and Rad Nicholson of Valley City. The two have each been involved in the Relay separately in the past, and are heading this year's event, which has some changes in store.

Faith Lutheran Church will rebuild after fire destroyed its Valley City home in October. The congregation has taken some of the first steps toward that end by starting the process of hiring an architect to start planning a new structure.
The congregation plans to rebuild on its current site and salvage what it can of the former building, said Tory Hart. While the building was virtually destroyed, some of the oldest stained-glass windows were salvageable, said Hart, and some of the old fellowship hall my be salvaged, if only the footings.

Grand Forks Red River gave Valley City all they could handle Tuesday night as they dominated the rebound game and built a 30-23 halftime lead, but five Hi-Liners stepped up to score in double figures and Valley City took a 50-49 lead with two minutes remaining en route to a 54-53 win.

The Barnes County Airport Municipal Airport Authority plans to have an entry in the 2014 Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off and place an advertisement in the 2014 Explore the Sheyenne Magazine to help publicize its planned 2014 airshow set for Sept. 6. Barnes County Relay for Life organizers are gearing up for this year's event, looking for teams and asking the public to donate on Giving Hearts Day. Money donated by the community to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life on Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour online give-a-thon hosted by Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation, will benefit the Barnes County Relay. Diane Sommerfeld, who does publicity for this year's Relay, said donations are taken online.
