Transport Company to Pay

The Barnes County Sheriff's Department and local farmers who participated in the 2011 capture of an escaped prisoner from an area corn field will be reimbursed for their efforts.

Fargo North (1-4 EDC, 1-4 overall) and Valley City (1-4, 1-4) played a tight tennis match on Thursday night in Valley, but North escaped with the 5-4 match win.

"A big thank you goes out to the Valley City Tennis Association for putting on our Tennis Fun Night and grilling hotdogs for everyone," Hi-Liner Head Coach Matt Nielson said. "Thanks to the whole Kringlie extended family for making this happen. We appreciate it."

Hi-Liner senior Derek Reimers beat North junior Ben Mostad, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in singles play.

Leever's Cake Decorator Receives Awards

Leever's Foods cake decorator LeAnn Strittmatter was given awards for two cakes she created and showed at the North Dakota Grocers Association Cake Challenge at the Ramada Inn in Fargo last Monday.
The Valley City resident placed first in the novelty theme cake division for a swan cake she made and third in the advance cupcake division for a tiger cake she made out of cupcakes.

Heitkamp Hosting Twitter Town Hall

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (@SenatorHeitkamp) will host a Twitter Town Hall on Tuesday, starting at 3:15 p.m. to talk about the recent developments in Syria, and her alternative proposal to address the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons.
In an interview Friday, Heitkamp said this is the second time she will be hosting a Twitter Town Hall. Her first effort was on education.
Anyone following @SenatorHeitkamp on Twitter can begin submitting questions about Syria by including #AskHeidiH with their tweet.

Jensen, Leininger Join Senior Companions

Kathleen Jensen and Myrna Leininger have joined the Lutheran Social Services Senior Companions program as a volunteer senior companion in the Barnes County area.
As senior companions, Jensen and Leininger provide free in-home assistance with daily living activities and social and recreational opportunities to help local seniors who are lonely, isolated, frail, disabled or homebound.

Elliott, Vikings Trample Trojans

Derek Elliott ran for 266 yards and two scores in a 56-28 loss to Morningside on Sept. 7.

It took him all of 30 seconds to score his first of four first-quarter touchdowns in the Vikings' 63-20 beatdown of NSAA rival Dakota State on Saturday night.

Local Hip-Hop Artist Performing in Fargo

A local hip-hop artist is performing a show in Fargo later this month. Erik Kiley, 19, of Valley City, will open for Pledge Empire Records, a group of hip-hop artists based out of the Twin Cities, at concert venue The New Direction in Fargo Sept. 21.
The show begins at 5 p.m., and tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Kiley can be reached for tickets via Facebook or on his cell phone at (701) 334-9006.
Kiley said his hip-hop career stemmed from writing poetry when he was younger. He began writing lyrics about a year ago.

Local Author Promoting Book

Local author Wayne McKirdy will be at the Barnes County Museum Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to promote his book, “Together.”
The Rev. Wayne McKirdy, a retired Methodist pastor, described the book he wrote with his wife, Maybelle, as a love story about their courtship and 51 years they spent together.

Help Bring Suicide 'Out of the Darkness'

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010 suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the country. That year, someone in the U.S. died of suicide every 13.7 minutes.
In fact, in 2002, the year Wellness in the Valley was started by Debbie Anderson, Barnes County had one of the highest rural suicide rates in the nation. Two years ago, five Barnes County residents committed suicide in a four-month period.
