In earlier times, wine was used as a beverage and also as a medicine for a variety of ailments.
A couple of years ago, my husband and I decided to learn how to make wine at home using the apples from the tree in our backyard. Soon we had a chemistry experiment going on in our basement.
Whenever we went downstairs, we could smell the distinctive aroma of fermentation as the sugar was converted to alcohol.
Our first attempt at wine did not result in a vinegar-flavored concoction, so that was good.
Several dozen turned out for the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea Banquet at the Sheyenne Care Center on Thursday.
The annual event sponsored by the Mercy Healthcare Foundation, Faith in Action of Mercy Hospital and the Sheyenne Care Center honors the valiant efforts, both big and small, of the many healthcare volunteers in the area who work hard just to make another’s life a little better.
“There is no greater gift that anyone can give, than to give of your life and your time,” said Mercy Hospital Director Keith Heuser who spoke briefly to the banquet crowd.
Time to stop and take a deep breath. On the Move 2012 wrapped up on April 15 after three and a half months of encouraging diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle decisions among residents in Barnes County, and organizers report the program has had its biggest year to date.
“I’d say it was a huge success. We had the largest membership we’ve ever had,” said Andrea Winter of the Young People’s Healthy Heart Program, an On the Move Partner.

As a lifelong gymnast, Valley City’s Taylor Johnson is no stranger to pulling off a routine.
But entering this weekend, the USA Gymnastics Level 8 athlete had a few butterflies.
Rather than a small competition at one of the numerous gyms around North Dakota, she’ll be taking the floor at the Minneapolis Convention Center for the USAG Region 4 Championships.
“I’m probably just going to get a good experience out of it,” Johnson, 13, said. “It’d be cool if I placed.”
It’s a trip that only a handful of members of the Valley Twisters have ever taken.

Bismarck’s Dakota Wizards basketball team, a developmental league team for the Golden State Warriors, has taken on a new opponent, bullying.
Earlier this month, the Wizards invited Griggs County Central students to their final home game to assist in their game plan to send out the message “stop bullying now.”
At the game, students took a pledge to treat people fairly, be inclusive and take action when bullying is happening to others. Additionally, the team highlighted a new North Dakota’s new anti-bullying law, “Cassidy’s Law”, which goes in effect this July.

Sorenson to golf at VCSU
Valley City High School golfer Ben Sorensen has signed a letter of intent to attend Valley City State University and join the Viking golf team, VCSU coach Nathan Stover announced Wednesday night.
Sorenson has been a key member of the Valley City High School golf team lettering every year since eighth grade. During that run he had the second best scoring average on a team that won the 2010 Class B state championship. Sorenson has won two high school tournaments and has nine top-ten finishes.
