February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

February 20, 2015

In recognition of February Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, students at Valley City High School, with the support of the Valley City Abused Persons Outreach Center, will plant orange flags in the ground near VCHS Friday representing the 1,303 North Dakota teens who admitted they had been physically hurt on purpose by someone they were dating or going out with one or more times in the past year.

Bison Bots to Compete at Legoland in May

Barnes County North Lego Robotics team Bison Bots will compete nationally in May after winning the regional tournament in Grand Forks.
The Bison Bots competed in Grand Forks on Feb. 7 at the University of North Dakota in the First Lego League FLL Robotics Regional Tournament.

New Deputy Could be Expensive

Barnes County Commissioners heard Tuesday that adding a new deputy and vehicle to the Barnes County Sheriff's Department to deal with expected effects on Barnes County from a planned 2,000-person man camp in the the Spiritwood area could cost $100,000 to $130,000 in the first year.

Thiel Wants SD Phone Changes

Barnes County IT director Jason Thiel would like to see telephones at the Barnes County Sheriff's Department connected into the Barnes County system rather than continuing with the three separate lines it now has at a cost of $30 per month each.

City Approves More Funding for Wellness Center

February 19, 2015

The Valley City Commission narrowly approved a Food and Beverage Grant of up to $500,000 for the Valley City Health, Wellness and Physical Education Center in a 3-2 vote at a regular meeting of the Valley City Commission Tuesday.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven and commissioner Madeline Luke voted no to the request presented by Bobby Koepplin of the Valley City Visitors Committee.

CCHD Move Predicted in May

A large quantity of asbestos found in a tunnel leading into the former First Community Credit Union building could postpone the City County Health District's move into its new headquarters until May, said Paula Thomsen, CCHD Home Health Care Coordinator.

Throwback Thursday: 1917 Fire Engine in 1960 Show

The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week on Thursdays submitted by our readers.

Lowell Busching provided the Times-Record with this photograph of a 1917 Seagrave fire engine that was driven in parades for many years, and was restored by firefighters including Busching's father, Eddie Busching, who worked on the engine.

Dispatchers: Keep Franklin in 911

February 18, 2015

Barnes County's three remaining 9-1-1 dispatchers appeared at a Tuesday Barnes County Commission meeting to tell commissioners they wanted Kimberly Franklin to remain as dispatch coordinator.

Recently three dispatchers quit, leaving Franklin and the trio as the only people trained to dispatch calls.

$2,000 Raised for Brendmoen

February 18, 2015

A dart tournament in Valley City earlier this month raised more than $2,000 for Michelle Brendmoen, who suffered brain aneurysms and underwent multiple surgeries last month.

The tournament was held at My Bar, owned by Scott and Peggy Sandvik.
