"Ever since Dan was a little guy, he loved baseball, he loved hanging around with the big guys, and he loved being the big guy for the little ones â€“ baseball was his passion." These words were written by Dan Buehner's father, Lynn, and spoken by Valley City State University President Steve Shirley at a memorial service held for the student on the campus Wednesday. Valley City senior Austen Meyer struck out four Grand Forks Central batters in six road innings on Thursday, but Knights senior Spencer Meyer fanned 10 Hi-Liners in six frames for the 5-0 game one win. Valley City outhit the Knights 7-6 in game two but came up short, 4-3, in a sixth-inning comeback bid.
Central brought in single runs in the second, third and fifth, and two more in the sixth, on eight total hits and three Valley City errors. Hi-Liner bats produced five hits.
Students and faculty said goodbye to Dan Buehner Wednesday during a memorial service at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the Valley City State University campus. Buehner, 23, who died in a rafting accident Monday, was a senior business major at VCSU and a catcher for the VCSU baseball team.
Southeast Judicial District Judge Jay Schmitz determined that the Valley City Public School Board did negotiate in good faith with the Valley City Education Association as the two entities discussed contract negotiations from July last year through February.
Schmitz decided that a change to section three in the health insurance portion of the contract cannot be included because the court found the parties did not agree to negotiate to section three.

Valley City State University will host a Gathering for Remembrance to honor the life of the late Dan Buehner at 7:30 p.m. today in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the VCSU campus.
Buehner, a VCSU senior from Blaine, Minn., died Monday in a rafting accident on the Sheyenne River in Valley City. A business administration major, Buehner was the starting catcher on the VCSU Viking baseball team.
The gathering Wednesday night will include remarks by VCSU President Steven W. Shirley, athletic director Jack Denholm and baseball coach Casey Olney.
The Valley City Fire Department received three fire calls Tuesday â€“ all within 45 minutes.
The first call, which came in just after noon, was a corn field fire near the Peak exit off I-94. The fire was in a harvested field and spread slowly, according to Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath, but firefighters had a hard time maneuvering trucks in the field, which made fighting the fire difficult, he said.
While crews were busy at the Peak fire, they were called to a grass fire near Martin's Landing, north of Lake Ashtabula.
Two students from the Sheyenne Valley Career and Technology Center will represent Valley City at the state Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition May 2. Students Wyatt Hatcher and Micah Anderson, along with with instructor Jim McFadgen, will be at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds when 20 students from across North Dakota will compete for more than $126,000 in scholarships. Mrs. North Dakota-America visited Valley City Tuesday. Eliza Potratz, Jamestown, who was crowned Mrs. North Dakota at a pageant April 12, read to students at Jefferson Elementary School, visited residents at the Sheyenne Care Center and made a couple other stops along the way.
