New Owners at VC Bar

A Valley City bar has a new name and new owners. Scott Sandvik, Valley City, and Jerry Jarvis, of Arizona, are the new owners of My Bar, formerly called The Ram, which was owned by Michelle Brendmoen. Sandvik and Jarvis became the owners of the bar, located at 240 East Main Street in Valley City, Feb. 19.

My Bar plans to have entertainment regularly, starting with Big Hammer Karaoke on Friday, March 7 from 9 p.m. to close. Sandvik said, "Come on down for entertainment after the Winter Show concert."

Shirley Named MSU President

The State Board of Higher Education Thursday named Valley City State University President Dr. Steven Shirley as the next president of Minot State University, Minot, N.D., said MSU spokeswoman Linda Benson. More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

BC Family Arrested on Drug Charges

Several members of a Barnes County family were arrested Tuesday on a variety of charges including possession of methamphetamine, possession of stolen property, and assault.

Barbara Case, 45, of Wimbledon, was charged in Barnes County District Court for possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, a class C felony: and possession of stolen property, a class A misdemeanor.

Concept Dentistry Gains 2 Dentists, New Technology

Two new dentists have joined Dr. Ted Hagen at Concept Dentistry in Valley City. Dr. Brian Bulik and Dr. Ann Slama each have skills that allow the practice to offer a variety of modern services.

VC Offering Smart Driver Course

The Barnes County Senior Center will be home to an American Association of Retired Persons Smart Driver Course 1 p.m. May 8, said Peter Farrelly, an AARP-certified instructor who lives in Valley City. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

Viking Softball Finishes Wednesday 2-1

Valley City State softball opened the 2014 season at the St. Paul Dome on Tuesday and finished the day 0-3, but had a 2-1 Wednesday to bring their season record up to 2-4 through the two-day stretch.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) 2, VCSU 1

Viking senior Samantha Nalley pitched six strong innings, but Viking bats could only muster three hits in a 2-1 loss to open the season. Nalley scattered eight hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out five in six innings of work.

Montrose (Minn.) Native Nicole Duske Signs with VCSU Basketball

Valley City State University women's basketball head coach Cathy Hanek announced Wednesday that Buffalo High School (Minn.) senior Nicole Duske has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings this fall.

Duske, a 5-foot-10-inch native of Montrose, Minn., plans to major in Health Science with a focus in Physical Therapy at VCSU.

Lady Hi-Liners Collar Wahpeton

Hi-Liner senior forward Dierra Diegel and senior guard Jessica Denholm had the hot hands Tuesday night as Valley City took down Wahpeton, 61-46, on the road to complement Jan. 28's 54-38 National Guard Night triumph over the Huskies at Valley City State's W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Diegel rounded up 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor, 2-of-3 from three-point range, 6-of-9 from the free throw line, six rebounds and five steals. Denholm drew up 14 points on 5-of-10 inside the arc.

Farm Burglary Case Closes

A conviction in Barnes County District Court last week marked the end of a case that began with a string of farmstead burglaries in 2012. Broc Allen Buytaert was sentenced in Barnes County District Court last week for his role in the robberies; previously Steven Lee Hovland and April Robyn Kapaun were sentenced for the same crimes. Winter Woes for Rural Water Customers

Rural water customers should protect against frozen water pipes, but with caution.
According to Perry Kapaun, manager of Barnes Rural water, with cold temps this winter and little insulation from snow, ground frost is deeper than usual meaning water pipes could freeze causing a litany of problems for homeowners.
