New Theatre Season Opens at VCSU: First Production This Weekend

Valley City State University students and faculty are busy at the start of a new theatre season on campus. “This is a year of books, families, and community engagement.”, said VCSU Director of Theatre, Jenni Lou Russi. Entering her fifth academic year at the university, Russi has put together a season to bridge the larger community with students at VCSU.

VCPS to Charge for Junior High, Sub-Varsity Games

Valley City Public Schools will start charging admission to junior high and sub-varsity games this winter.
The decision was made at the Valley City Public Schools regular board meeting Monday evening after a suggestion was made from activities director Marty Bratrud.
He said that charging $2 for adults and $1 for students for admission to seventh and eighth grade games as well as sub-varisty games should be enough to cover the costs of officials and basic equipment and prevent the activities department budget from deficit.

VC Needs Firefighters

The Valley City Volunteer Fire Department is looking for a few good men and women. Currently, the fire department is looking to hire new firefighters who are willing to make a commitment to their community.
"We are asking you to help us so we can help others," said VCFD Chief Gary Retterath in a press release.
Applicants must be able to pass a drug screen, a physical examination and an agility test. The fire department will provide training. "You have to be able to lift, carry, pull and drag, said Retterath Tuesday.

I'm in North Dakota (And I Like it That Way)

Whitesnake sang, "I don't know where I'm going, but I sure know where I've been."

I've studied abroad in Italy, taught English in South Korea and visited Canada, Spain, France, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Morocco, Japan and changed planes in Amsterdam, but I really like my latest stop, North Dakota.

Yes, I'm serious.

Bryan Adams said, "Ain't no use in complainin' when you've got a job to do," and he was right. Living here is just like living anywhere else because work is work, but I'm finally back to doing what I'm good at.

VCHS Sweeps Devils Lake on Pink Night

Lady Hi-Liner volleyball looked to stay in the Eastern Dakota Conference playoff hunt as they hosted rival Devils Lake on Tuesday night, VCHS's Pink Night, dedicated to showing support for cancer awareness and helping to offset costs in Becky Maasjo's cancer treatment with a free will Pass the Hat donation.

Valley City celebrated Pink Night and stayed right in the thick of playoff contention by sweeping the Firebirds, 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-18).

City, County Cops Want CAD System for Dispatch

Top law enforcement officers from from Valley City and Barnes County have a common goal, they both want a Computer Aided Dispatch system, and they hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Gabel Ride Donates $10K to Hospice

The Thundering Saints have donated $10,000 to Hospice of the Red River Valley, generated from proceeds of the fifth annual Debbie Gabel Memorial Ride held in Valley City on July 27.
The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care to those in Valley City and surrounding communities.
Gabel said Friday the donation is up about $3,000 from 2012, and about the same amount as was contributed three years ago.
“Our goal is to increase the amount every year,” Gabel said.

First Lady Speaks to Community Leaders on Early Literacy Program

School leaders and representatives of local nonprofit groups heard a presentation about an early literacy program from North Dakota First Lady Betsy Dalrymple Monday morning.
Dalrymple told the audience that met in the Washington Elementary School library that morning about a program called Dolly Parton Imagination Library that gives free books to children from birth to age 5 in an effort to get them reading before they start school.

VCSU Football Drops to No. 22

Valley City State football, the North Star Athletic Association with a 2-0 conference record, dropped six spots this week from No. 16 to No. 22 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 national poll, announced by the national office Monday afternoon.

Barnes County North Volleyball Beats L-M/M, 3-1

Litchville-Marion/Montpelier volleyball traveled to Barnes County North on Monday night for a very competitive District 5 rivalry match.

LMM kept it close throughout the match as two sets were decided by only two points, but BCN held on for a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19) win.
